About Catherine

I am a Senior Research Fellow at a top-ten global university, with over a decade of experience in social research, teaching and postgraduate supervision. I completed my BA at the University of Oxford and my Masters and PhD in social and cultural geography at the University of Birmingham.

My career has been interdisciplinary, working across human geography and the social sciences in a range of UK universities and departments. I specialise in innovative qualitative research, particularly research involving children, families and marginalised communities, with a strong grounding in research ethics.

I have also held research roles outside academia, giving me a perspective that combines academic rigour with real-world application. My work has been funded by major UK and European funders, including ERC, AHRC, NIHR and local authorities.

Alongside my academic role, I offer specialist mentoring for Masters and PhD students seeking thoughtful, high-level support with research design, qualitative methods, ethics, thesis development, viva preparation and responding to supervisor feedback. I particularly enjoy supporting students undertaking complex or interdisciplinary projects.

I have experience as:

• PhD supervisor
• Masters dissertation supervisor
• PhD examiner
• Lecturer and research mentor
• Interdisciplinary researcher across multiple departments
• Researcher in both academic and non-academic settings

I understand research from the perspectives of student, supervisor and examiner, which allows me to give realistic and constructive guidance.
