  • Can you tell us about your first experience using a computer?

I used the computer first time when I was 11 and ... it was love at first sight! I loved playing strategy games like World of Warcraft, Age of Empires, and Warcraft 3, actually I loved them so much that once my father told me "Son, you don't know what the sun looks like anymore!".
Thanks to video games I wanted to get a job working on the computer, at first, I didn't know it was going to be programming! I still play to this day World of Warcraft, it's simply amazing for me!
  • What is the technological evolution that has marked you most and what will be, in your eyes, a turning point in this field?

I have worked for an AI startup, a spinoff from Oxford university, and I think definitely Artificial Intelligence will change the world. Cloud computing is going to amplify the change as well.
  • Explain your expertise, your interest in it and, more broadly, its importance in the computer world.

I am a degree-educated Senior Software Engineer with more than 4 years of experience in developing complex Web and desktop apps. I developed software for various industries like supply chain, project management, Artificial Intelligence, big pharmacology, and now I work as a Senior Software Engineer for a swiss IT consulting company, Zuhlke. The best professional quality that I have is a love for learning and my ideal role is one where this is encouraged and supported. I love technology, growth, and productivity. In my professional career, I worked with technologies like Java, JavaScript, Groovy, SQL, Spring, Grails, AWS, and others since I've been programming for the past 13 years.
Apart from this, I am a member of the British Computing Society, which means that I make a constant commitment to upskill myself and abide by a moral code of conduct.
  • Do so-called 'visionaries', such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg inspire you or do you have other role models?

I think Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were indeed visionaries and I have huge respect for them. Definitely, Steve Jobs is an inspiration for me and also Bill Gates is a great technology leader, philanthropist and I thoroughly enjoy his book recommendations. I am not very sure if Mark Zuckerberg is a visionary, I think he's more interested in making business but definitely Facebook has changed the world in a positive way I think.

I mostly like Computer Scientists that have made huge contributions to the field of Computing, however, they are not well known to the outside world. I am talking about people like Alan Turing, Dennis Ritchie, Edsger Dijkstra, Bjarne Stroustrup, etc. For instance, I think Alan Turing was a true genius and he was on a par with Albert Einstein, no wonder why he's considered the father of computing. He foresaw a lot of the inventions that we take for granted today!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I have been programming since I was 14 but only when I was 20 I realized that programming can actually solve problems from real life. I was participating in a robotics competition and when I pressed the button to move my robocar forward on the Android app that I developed it was ... just magic! It was a "Eureka!" moment for me. Bearing this lesson in mind I always try to make learning programming fun and try to help my students in solving problems that they care about (e.g. learning how to code so that they can write trading algorithms or develop video games). I think in this way I motivate them to study CS even more.
  • What would you say to an uncomfortable person in front of a screen who says that "IT is too complicated"?

I would say that as long as you can do addition and subtraction then you can get a job in tech like Frontend Developer (develop the UI of a website) and potentially, later on, do Backend Development as well (implementing useful behaviour in a website, e.g. features). Apart from this, if you have a STEM background, I am confident that in 3 to 6 months I can help someone who's dedicated to getting a Frontend Job at a tech company.

I was talking about Steve Jobs above and how he is a visionary in my eyes, he once said something like this "Remember that things around you were made by people no smarter than you!" which means you can do it too!
  • What are your other passions, related or non-related to computers?

I like 3D printing, gaming, and reading books on history, philosophy, and economics. I love martial arts, music, travelling, and socializing with people. In general, I am interested in understanding myself better and better and also experiencing all this transitory life has to offer.
  • What makes you a Superprof in IT?

My expertise gained as a Software professional, my expertise gained at YMCA Paisley in teaching programming to young persons through gamification, and last but not least, my education - BSc in Computer Science, MSc in "Mobile Web Development".
