About Daniel
"I didn't touch a piano seriously until my thirties, teaching myself slowly through trial, error, and a lot of frustration before eventually taking proper lessons myself. Nine years of teaching later, with around one hundred fifty students behind me, I've built my entire approach around what actually helped a genuinely nervous, late-starting adult learner, because that adult learner was me. I don't come from a conservatory background and I think that's exactly why beginners relax around me, since I'm not measuring them against some polished childhood standard I never had myself. Most of my students are adults returning to an old dream or starting completely fresh, often after years of telling themselves it's too late, which I understand more personally than most teachers can. I keep my studio relaxed, a bit informal, and genuinely encouraging, because stiff formality was never what helped me learn. Watching someone play a full song for the first time, badly at first and then less badly, remains genuinely thrilling to me every single time it happens. I'm not the flashiest teacher and I won't pretend otherwise, but I am patient, honest, and I remember exactly what it feels like to start from zero as a grown adult.

I came to piano as an adult beginner myself, so I build lessons around the exact frustrations I remember having, mainly the sense that everyone else already knew what they were doing. We start dead simple, just finding notes and getting comfortable at the keys without any pressure to sound impressive early on. I teach reading music gradually, alongside playing by ear, because relying only on notation felt isolating to me as a beginner and I don't want students stuck the same way. Technique gets attention, posture and hand shape mostly, but I explain it in plain terms rather than academic language that made my eyes glaze over back when I was learning. Songs the student actually recognizes come in early, usually simplified at first, because motivation matters more early on than technical purity. I keep practice assignments small and doable, since I remember how a huge to-do list used to make me quit for weeks at a time. Mistakes get treated as completely normal here, not something to apologize for, and I say that out loud a lot because plenty of adult students need to hear it. Progress gets celebrated in small, specific ways rather than vague encouragement, because that's what actually kept me going.
