About Rosemary
I completed a Bachelor of Business Science degree with Honours in Economics in 2001, and in 2006 I completed my Master of Business Science degree in Economics. I also hold a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) specialising in teaching Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, and Economics to Senior Phase and Further Education and Training students.
My love of teaching began whilst I was at UCT. I was actively involved with the tutoring of undergraduate and postgraduate Economics students for over 6 years, and was the Head Tutor for the Honours Econometrics module for five years. I also assisted with the marking of tests, exams and projects. Having completed my Masters Degree, I worked as an Economist for a number of years doing academic research and also doing economics consulting work. I subsequently decided to take a break from my economics work, because the teaching profession was calling me! This is when I registered for my PGCE, in order to get the necessary teaching qualification.
I have always been a patient, caring and compassionate educator who takes a great interest in her learners' progress and in their mastery of the subject. My enthusiasm for teaching and my ability to explain difficult concepts translates into a deeper understanding of the topic by my learners, resulting in a greater sense of capability, more positive outlook and significantly improved grades in my learners. My greatest sense of achievement comes from helping learners who are struggling with a subject, building their confidence, understanding and technique in the subject, and then watching them excel.

Preparation for the SAT has been compared to the training required for a Marathon. It is no surprise that the whole process can be very overwhelming for both learners and parents. This is especially true for learners in South Africa, where making the decision to write the SAT is very often a personal choice, rather than a school-based requirement. Additionally, there are very few educators in South Africa who are familiar and experienced with the requirements of sitting for the SAT here, as well as precisely what is required in a top-class SAT Preparation Programme.
This is where I come in! I have helped many Grade 11 & 12 learners prepare for the SAT, and many Grade 10 & 11 learners prepare for the PSAT. My greatest sense of achievement comes from the numerous learners that I have given personalised lessons to and who have managed to increase their baseline test score by up to 200 marks when they write their actual SAT. My SAT Preparation Programme is a comprehensive one, and involves all of the following:
• Setting up a College Board account and assistance with the actual registration process for writing the SAT in Cape Town (or Johannesburg if you are not based in Cape Town and choose to have online lessons with me);
• Determining what your minimum target SAT score you should realistically aim for, based on your reasons for writing the SAT and/or which American universities you intend applying to;
• In-depth, question-level analysis of your PSAT results (if you have taken the PSAT) and identifying your particular areas of weakness that you can improve on with the help of my specially designed, personalised interventions before you write the actual SAT;
• A Baseline, SAT Practice Test that you will write under test conditions in order to identify your particular areas of weakness that you can improve on with the help of my specially designed, personalised interventions before you write the actual SAT;
• A “Strategy Session”, in which I give you invaluable techniques for maximising your score on the SAT. I will explain the different sections covered in the SAT, the scoring and timing per section, and how to use various answering strategies to your benefit. We will also score your Baseline Test together, and in so doing I will explain how the SAT is scored and scaled, and what those scores mean;
• Based on your Baseline SAT Practice Test score, I will develop your own, personalised work-plan that includes lessons, notes and practice problems in the specific areas that you most need to improve in before writing the actual SAT;
• Continual practice through the writing of a total of 8 real, official College Board SAT Practice Tests under test conditions. These will be used both to monitor your progress, and for you to gain experience at the strict time conditions the SAT is written under.
