About Ethan
I am a recent graduate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where I majored in Cognitive Science with an emphasis in Artificial Intelligence. I have always had a passion for mathematics and learning in general. They say the best way to learn something is to teach, and I couldn't agree more.
I started working as a college tutor in the Fall of 2020 for the Peralta Community College District. My primary concentration is in Mathematics, including courses such as Calculus, Trigonometry, and Algebra. While Mathematics is my main focus, I also enjoy teaching other subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, Economics, Psychology, English, and Japanese.
During my time as a tutor, I have successfully helped over two hundred students in these courses and consistently worked twenty hours a week. I have obtained the International Tutor Training Program Certification Level 2 (CRLA) as an Advanced tutor, thanks to my extensive experience and completion of the required tutoring courses.
In my free time, I enjoy sailing, swimming, surfing, playing the piano, and reading. Currently, I am reading Walter Isaacson’s biography of Einstein. A fun fact: It is a common myth that Einstein flunked out of math, but he did graduate at the bottom of his college class. This was due to Einstein's rebellious independence and curiosity, which displeased his professors. It is this very independence that allowed him to revolutionize physics as we know it. I strive to encourage this free and independent thinking in my students as well.

I have been tutoring for over three years, and my teaching approach is centered around understanding you as an individual. Creating a comfortable environment and getting to know you personally, as well as your goals for these lessons, is important to me. I am flexible and willing to work with you at any skill level.
If you feel unsure about the overall concept, we can start from scratch using one of my pre-planned lesson plans. I have carefully crafted these lesson plans from my time as a college tutor. This will help us establish a strong foundation for future lessons. On the other hand, if you feel confident about the concept but need more practice, we can work through multiple practice problems together until you can complete them independently.
I value getting to know my students, and I'm genuinely interested in hearing about your dreams and passions. I believe in active learning to keep my students engaged throughout the lessons, avoiding a lecturing approach. Tutoring is a collaborative effort between the tutor and the student, working together towards the shared goal of success. There's nothing more fulfilling for me than witnessing the positive outcomes of our lessons.
For our first free lesson, our focus will be on getting to know each other better. This will allow me to understand your specific needs and learning style, enabling us to determine if we are a good fit for each other. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions at all!

Ethan was an amazing tutor, when I first started taking calculus, I was so worried about failing and not doing well because I felt so behind and I didn’t understand what was going on and getting Ethan as a tutor was an amazing decision, I ended up getting a great grade in the class and I now feel so prepared to take calc 2, I cannot thank him enough, he is very patient and helpful
Ethan is the best tutor I’ve ever had. Not only does he have an incredibly deep understanding of mathematics, but his people skills are excellent. He is always able to communicate in a patient and effective way that suits the student's learning needs.

From my experience with having Ethan as a tutor, I appreciated his patience and sincere approach to teaching. Every time I had a session with him, I felt that I was actually learning more and getting more practice rather than just being given the answer and it helped me tremendously throughout my course. I highly recommend him!!
