About Joel
I’m an independent photojournalist based in London, with 25 years of professional experience in photography.
I graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in 2003, after studying Photography and Design in Bradford, UK. Since then, I have worked internationally, focusing on documentary photography, photojournalism, migration and the long-term effects of political conflict.
I spent five years based in Afghanistan and have also lived and worked in Kyiv and Moscow. My work has been published in The New York Times Magazine, The Guardian, TIME, Der Spiegel and The Wall Street Journal, among others.
Alongside my photographic practice, I have taught workshops and enjoy mentoring photographers at all levels. I’m particularly interested in helping students develop their own way of seeing, build confidence and create photography that feels personal and meaningful.

My teaching is practical, encouraging and adapted to each student. Rather than simply learning technical rules, you will learn how to see, think and make creative decisions as a photographer.
We can discuss and develop your existing work, or create new work together, depending on your interests and goals.
My professional roots are in 25 years of international photojournalism, but I have also worked across a broad variety of photographic disciplines, including teaching workshops.
I enjoy mentoring passionate photography students at any level, whether you are just beginning, looking to develop your skills, or wanting to take your photography in a more personal and creative direction.
Lessons can range from 30 minutes to full days and can take place online or in London.
