About Emily
Hi, I’m Emily Van Heusen—a contemporary artist, RISD MA in Teaching graduate, and dedicated arts educator with over 4 years of experience working with high school, college, and adult learners. My background is in fine arts, with a focus on painting, printmaking, and mixed media, and I specialize in helping students build strong, authentic portfolios for college applications, refine technical skills, and develop a confident, meaningful studio practice. I bring a balance of structure and openness to each lesson, tailoring my approach to the needs of the individual. I’m deeply committed to helping students not only master materials and techniques, but also connect emotionally and conceptually with their work. My classroom and private tutoring experience includes working with students from diverse learning backgrounds, including neurodivergent and nontraditional learners. What you can expect from me: clear communication, constructive critique, deep listening, and guidance that supports both creative risks and professional growth. My lessons are designed to meet students exactly where they are—whether you're a high school student preparing an art school portfolio, a college student refining your studio practice, or an adult learner returning to creative exploration. I specialize in painting, printmaking, drawing, and mixed media, and I offer a warm, personalized, and concept-driven approach that supports both technical growth and artistic voice.
Each lesson begins with a brief check-in and intention-setting, followed by a focused studio session. Depending on your goals, we might work through foundational exercises, experiment with new materials, critique works-in-progress, or refine your portfolio for college admissions. I often integrate sketchbook prompts, guided experimentation, and writing exercises (like artist statements and project descriptions) to deepen reflection and clarity.
With a Master’s in Teaching from RISD and years of experience as a practicing artist and educator, I offer more than just technical instruction—I support your confidence, creative risk-taking, and long-term growth. What sets me apart is my ability to weave together emotional support, professional insight, and high-level critique in a way that empowers emerging artists to find their unique voice while building skills that last.
