About Rich

I completed a BA (Hons) degree in Russian studies, awarded from the University of Nottingham in 1995. During both my second and final years, a significant part of the academic content consisted of courses relating to French studies as subsidiary subjects. My final result was II(i) with a distinction awarded in spoken Russian. I am a PGCE qualified teacher of modern foreign languages (Russian and French). I have had five years' experience of teaching modern languages in secondary schools in various parts of the UK. I have had over 20 years' experience of tutoring modern foreign languages on a one-to-one basis and I continue to tutor French on a weekly basis. I am extremely well-equipped with a very wide variety of visual resources and worksheets, which facilitate regular and thorough practice of all four language skills. I am also a CELTA qualified teacher of English as a Second Language, and I have 25 years' experience of teaching English, both in a voluntary and in a paid capacity. My EFL teaching has mostly been based in the UK; however, I also spent six months teaching English in Moscow during which time I was employed in two different schools, along with teaching students one-to-one on a daily basis. I have a very calm, natural and positive manner whether communicating in Russian, English or French. I am very aware of the importance of praise and encouragement to help build confidence and motivate students.

Perfect! I feel very lucky to have found Rich on SuperProf. He has tutored my 11 year old for several months now and has been unfailingly punctual, polite, patient. He arrives prepared with lessons to help my son better understand and enjoy the French language. My son's marks have improved and his confidence in French has grown. My son has ADHD and it is not always easy to hold his interest, however Rich keeps the energy level high and my son genuinely enjoys their time together. I can whole-heartedly recommend Rich as a French tutor.

From January 2024 - July 2025, Rich tutored our son in French, as part of his home education programme. Our son is unable to manage a school environment due to his neurodivergence (ADHD and Autism) and when he started with Rich he was chronically stressed from his difficult experiences in school. Rich was unfailingly gentle, patient and positive with our son, skilfully bringing him back to the subject after the inevitable lapses in concentration, and managing his distress with real kindness. He prepared carefully for the lessons but usually had a back-up plan if our son was finding Plan A difficult and a new approach was required. He was always punctual and reliable and communicated well with us as parents. He was very willing to work with us to tailor his lessons to our son's needs. Our son trusted Rich and enjoyed his lessons.
