About Andrew

I first started tutoring after I graduated high school and enrolled at Joliet Junior College in the Fall of 2014. I took calculus 2 and calculus 3 and my professor noticed my mathematical abilities and clarity in my solutions. He asked me to apply to become a tutor at JJC's Tutoring and Learning Center (TLC). His recommendation went a long way, and I was immediately hired. I tutored there for 20+ hours a week every week including the summers during my 2 years at JJC. During that time I was promoted to a tutor for TRIO Upward Bound, where I tutored underprivileged students. During these two tutored just about every college level math class an undergraduate student could take, including elementary math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus Business Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential equations, Finite Mathematics, Discrete Mathematics, Statistics, Probability, as well as other stem fields such as chemistry, physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science.

After completing my general requirements at JJC, I transferred to UIUC majoring in electrical engineering. I continued tutoring there for OMSA, the Office of Minority Student Advancement, where I helped racial and gender minorities transition to university by educating them on campus resources and helping them with their coursework. On top of that I worked as a course aide for ECE 110: introduction to electrical engineering, where I helped freshmen with their lab assignments and helped inspire them to reach their goals of becoming capable electrical engineers. Outside of the university I also worked at Mathnasium where I helped elementary school, middle school, and high school students with their math coursework.

Outside of tutoring I have interned as a software engineer and an electrical engineer and I recently graduated from UIUC from the computer science + math program. However, I enjoy tutoring so much that I decided to register with WYZANT so I can continue helping students with their academics. My teaching method is based on the Socratic method. I design my lessons to draw the answer out of the student by asking simple questions that ultimately lead to the answer. I find this to be much more effective than giving the student the answer, the formula, or the algorithm for solving the problem. My focus is helping the student think logically and learn how to derive all the formulas and concepts from first principles. Ultimately the goal is not to just get a good grade in the class but to develop intellectual maturity. This includes teaching the student how to teach themselves, strategies for learning and thinking through a problem, etc. so that the student can stand on there own two feet in future courses and beyond.
