About Isabella
I have just finished my studies of French and Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh, having begun learning French and Spanish aged 4. I was awarded Top in New Zealand for IGCSE French in 2017, and High Achiever in AS Level Spanish Spanish in 2019, at the NZ Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards. At the end of Year 12, my school awarded me the L6th Form prize for Modern Foreign Languages. I graduated with the top grade in French for my year (Distinction 1 in Pre-U Level French). In 2021, I was an editor for the French section of my university's language magazine, Babbel. I enjoyed two years as Treasurer for Les Escogriffes, Edinburgh University's French Theatre Society, having played my role as director for them with panache in 2021-2022, putting on the extremely successful sell-out Le Barbier de Séville at the the French Consulate in Edinburgh in March 2022. I also was a 4th Year French Programme Representative, providing invaluable support in liaising students in their final year studying French at Edinburgh and our teaching staff. This was following a very successful year abroad in Paris, where I interned first at an international contract research organisation, and later at a small real estate agency. Another highlight of my university degree was my dissertation on the judgement of Simon de Montfort in the Song of the Albigensian Crusade, for which I obtained a First.
Outside of my academic studies, I enjoy translating foreign poetry and plays. Case in point, I translated and adapted Cyrano de Bergerac for my theatrical troupe in Oxford, which was performed at the University in the summer of 2024 to great acclaim.

As a linguist, I have a highly scientific approach to teaching languages, but it's also very easy for me to adapt my method according to the needs of the student. Whether it's trying to learn the language from scratch for a trip in the future, or artfully cramming for a school exam, I have you covered. I am conscientious and thorough, but also I firmly believe lessons should be fun. A lesson with me might look like consolidation of vocabulary we've learnt last week with a vocabulary test (on Kahoot), looking at some new phrases, conversation practice, finished with watching a French comedy sketch or listening to a chanson. A Level students, don't worry, you can't avoid the vocab Kahoot. If you are interested in drama or film, this is a bonus, because I am a theatrical fiend with a healthy love of cinema. We will have a lot to discuss, I have no doubt.
I have been tutoring since the UK lockdown of 2021, so I have much experience teaching online, but, with time, also plenty in person! I have taught mostly to GCSE level, but I have experience teaching to A Level in other subjects, but I am just as happy to take on students who just want to learn French for themselves, or students who need some support with uni assignments.
