About Laura
I am a recent graduate of LAMDA (The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art). I graduated in August 2020 having just finished its highly competitive three-year BA course in Acting. I trained extensively in a variety of indispensable acting techniques; whilst the school’s ethos is Stanislavskian, my training ranged into the study of Laban, Bretch, Michael Checkov, Lecoq, and Feldenkrais to name a few. I’ve been inspired by the attentive, individualistic teaching style at LAMDA. It’s taught me that there is no one way to train an actor; there is no ‘one’ actor. Because acting is a subjective art, each individual brings themselves to the craft. It my job as a tutor to bring out my pupil’s individuality.
I apply this approach to my academic subjects. Knowing there is no one way of learning I tailor each lesson to my pupil, often making interdisciplinary use of my acting background. I actively listen to my pupil’s needs and keep them engaged through a variety of activities and approaches. Although I chose to study acting, I have a strong academic background. I was offered a place to study Anthropology (BSc) at UCL and have applied the analytical skills I honed during my Biology, History and English Literature A Levels (in which I received straight As) to my work as an actor. I believe that the theoretical and the practical complement each other; that, for example, Shakespeare is best understood when approached through both literary analysis and performance. These words were never intended to be read – they were meant to be spoken.
In addition to offering tuition in Acting, English and Biology I have a nuanced understanding of the mechanics and teaching of accent work. Having received outstanding exam results, certified to a native standard in my accent exams during my time at LAMDA, I am able to analyse and refine the accents of others. My particular interests being in the accents of the British Isles and America.
As a working actor I am based in London and my schedule is flexible. My ethos is that to be able to absorb something, you need to get out of your head and into your body. In my lessons it won’t be unusual for my pupils to be up and out of the chair, physically interacting with the subject and materials. I have extensive training in both teaching and learning online, so I understand the struggles of ‘Zoom fatigue’ and I will do everything in my power to keep learning an engaging and inspiring experience.
