About Isaac
I am a recent graduate of the University of Oxford, where I studied for a BA in English Literature. I then won a scholarship to study for an MA in Modern English Literature at Oxford. I received first class honours in both of these qualifications. Further to this, I also have an A* in English Literature A-Level, achieving the highest mark in my school.
I have always found English to be a fascinating subject, not just because I love reading, but also because it lies at the intersection of many different areas of intellectual inquiry. During my studies, I was able to explore a range of different academic fields, including history, philosophy, cultural theory, music criticism and linguistics.
When I was in my third year, I tutored first year students on basic essay writing and research skills, as well as subject specific topics. I also helped at my old school to advise prospective Oxbridge applicants on personal statements and interviews. I found the experience of passing on the skills I had learnt to be highly enjoyable, as I was able to show new students the things I wish I had been told at that point in my studies. It is for this reason that I started tutoring online last year.
I look forward to taking on new students and am comfortable teaching a wide range of subjects from GCSE up to an undergraduate level. My current students are having tutorials in English Literature, History, Philosophy, the IB and Cambridge B2 First qualifications. In my initial sessions, I like to start by asking the student to tell me a bit about themselves, what subjects they like and what they find difficult. I think this is an important step to establishing what we both might be able to get out of our sessions and how I should go about planning for subsequent lessons.
Depending on what the student wants to achieve, I will tend to set a bit of work for the student to complete before the session so we have something concrete to work on. This might involve some further reading, a past paper or a specific essay question. In the tutorial we will then go through the work they submitted, discussing what worked well and what can be improved on. After our session, I will send a copy of their work back with my annotated comments for reference.
I like to try and keep the sessions informal and fun so they don't feel like work. At their best, I think tutorials should simply feel like a conversation about a topic, as opposed to students feeling like they are being forced by a teacher to learn a topic. This is the environment in which students are most receptive to new ideas, personal growth and, eventually, academic results which reflect that.
