In the last year I have graduated with an MA (Hons) degree in English from the University of St Andrews, the top university in the country for reading English. Throughout my degree I tutored both English language and literature. Teaching for me is about inspiring you to love English as much as I do. I have tutored English throughout university and I specialise in tutoring for ages eight to sixteen in both language and literature. From my extensive experience I have learnt the importance of getting to know each individual student and tailoring the lessons to their needs. A typical session with me will last fifty minutes and may start with a small quiz on the topics we covered the week before to ensure knowledge retention. We will then move into engaging tasks that build on the skills we have already developed and aim to develop at least one new skill throughout each session. The session will end with a discussion between me and my student on what we want to cover next week. I find this discussion is vital for focusing on what is actually most important for the student, instead of just following pre-planned sessions. These discussions also allow for our sessions to follow along and build upon what the student is learning at school, allowing a positive impact in real time on grades and class development.
