About Russell
About Me I’m Russell Anderson, Sr., an experienced electronics specialist, Amateur Radio Extra Class license holder, and passionate educator. With over three decades of hands-on experience in electronics, communications, and radio theory, I bring both technical expertise and a deep love for teaching to my tutoring sessions. My journey in electronics began in the early 1980s when I built my first computer, sparking a lifelong fascination with technology. Over the years, I honed my skills as a radio/electronics technician for the State of Ohio, a Senior RF Technician, and an Amateur Radio operator (call sign KB8DPN). I have also served as an ARRL Accredited Volunteer License Examiner and Registered Instructor, helping countless individuals pass their Amateur Radio exams and develop a strong foundation in radio communications. Beyond my technical background, I’m a dedicated mentor and teacher who believes that learning should be engaging, accessible, and practical. I take a patient and structured approach, ensuring that even complex topics are broken down into simple, understandable concepts. Whether you’re just starting with basic electronics or working toward your Amateur Radio license, I will guide you step by step, helping you gain confidence and mastery in the subject. My goal is not just to help you pass an exam, but to equip you with real-world knowledge and problem-solving skills that you can apply beyond the classroom. With my decades of experience, professional expertise, and a supportive teaching style, you can trust that you’re learning from someone who is both knowledgeable and genuinely invested in your success. Let’s embark on this learning journey together—whether it’s understanding circuits, mastering radio theory, or preparing for your ham radio license, I’m here to help you succeed!

I’m excited to offer tutoring for those interested in learning basic electronics or preparing for their Amateur Radio license. With my background in electronics, radio communications, and years of experience as an Amateur Radio instructor and Extra Class license holder, I bring a practical, engaging approach to learning these topics.
My Teaching Method & Techniques
My tutoring sessions are designed to be accessible, hands-on, and engaging. I focus on:
Concept-Based Learning: Instead of just memorizing answers, I emphasize understanding core principles, whether it’s Ohm’s Law in electronics or FCC regulations for Amateur Radio.
Real-World Applications: I bridge the gap between theory and practice, using real-life examples, circuits, and radio operation scenarios.
Interactive Lessons: Students will work through problem-solving exercises, build circuits (for electronics), or practice with exam-style questions (for ham radio).
Step-by-Step Approach: Each session builds on the last, ensuring a clear path from beginner to competency.
Typical Lesson Plan
Each session is customized to the student’s needs, but a typical lesson might look like this:
For Basic Electronics:
1. Introduction & Review – Discuss previous concepts, answer any questions.
2. Core Topic Discussion – Example: Ohm’s Law, resistors, and voltage calculations.
3. Hands-On Activity – Build a simple circuit or troubleshoot a common issue.
4. Review & Q&A – Reinforce learning, assign a small project or reading.
For Amateur Radio Licensing:
1. Regulation & Theory Overview – Cover key FCC rules, band plans, or electronic principles.
2. Practice Questions – Work through actual exam-style questions and explain the reasoning behind correct answers.
3. Hands-On (if applicable) – Discuss real-world ham radio operations, such as making contacts or using repeaters.
4. Test Strategies & Homework – Assign a practice test or additional study materials.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
Deep Practical Experience: I have decades of hands-on experience in electronics and radio, ensuring I teach from real-world knowledge, not just textbooks.
Mentorship, Not Just Instruction: I don’t just prepare students for an exam—I help them build confidence, develop problem-solving skills, and understand how to apply their knowledge in real scenarios.
Patient, Supportive Approach: Whether you’re a complete beginner or just need help with tricky concepts, I tailor lessons to your learning style and pace.
Proven Success in Teaching: Having trained numerous individuals for their Amateur Radio licenses, I understand how to break down complex topics into easy-to-understand lessons.
Who the Lessons Are For
Basic Electronics: Anyone looking to understand fundamental electrical concepts, whether for personal interest, hobby projects, or career development. No prior knowledge is required!
Amateur Radio Licensing: Anyone preparing for the Technician, General, or Extra Class exams. Whether you’re brand new to ham radio or upgrading your license, I’ll help you pass with confidence.
If you’re ready to dive into the world of electronics or Amateur Radio, let’s get started! My goal is to make learning these subjects fun, engaging, and practical—so you’re not just memorizing facts, but truly understanding and applying them.
