About Saqiv
My name is Saqiv Williams, and chess has been at the center of my life for years. I currently serve as the Head Chess Coach at Queen's University — a role that has sharpened not only my understanding of the game, but my ability to communicate it clearly to students of every background and skill level.
I hold an online rating of 2150, which places me well within the top tier of active players in Canada. But what I'm most proud of isn't a number — it's the moment a student finally sees the board differently. That shift in perspective is what I work toward in every single lesson.
I specialize in coaching children and competitive players rated under 1800 Elo. Whether your child is picking up a chess piece for the very first time, or you're a tournament player stuck at the same rating and hungry for a breakthrough, I know exactly what it takes to move you forward.
My lessons are structured, personalized, and always purposeful. We don't waste time — every session is built around what you specifically need, whether that's sharpening your tactics, understanding opening principles, cleaning up your endgame, or learning how to think at the board under pressure.
I bring the same level of preparation and professionalism to private lessons that I bring to my university program. You can expect punctuality, honest feedback, clear explanations, and a coach who is genuinely invested in your progress.
I'd love to hear about your goals. Feel free to reach out — the first lesson is on me, and there's no pressure at all.

Hi! I'm Saqiv Williams — Head Chess Coach at Queen's University and an active online player rated 2150. I've spent years helping students of all ages fall in love with the game and rise through the ranks, and I'd love to help you or your child do the same.
Whether you're a complete beginner, a parent looking for a fun and structured activity for your child, or a competitive player sitting under 1800 Elo and hungry to improve — my lessons are designed with you in mind.
What you can expect from our sessions:
— Personalized lesson plans built around your specific strengths, weaknesses, and goals
— Tactical puzzles and pattern recognition drills to sharpen your calculation
— Opening repertoire guidance tailored to your style of play
— Endgame fundamentals that most players under 1800 overlook
— Full game analysis with honest, constructive feedback
— Tournament preparation and competitive mindset coaching
I believe chess improvement comes fastest when lessons feel like discovery, not drill. My approach balances structured theory with hands-on play, so you're always learning something you can actually use at the board.
I teach online via Chess.com or Lichess, and in-person in the Kingston area. First sessions are relaxed and focused on getting to know where you are and where you want to go.
Feel free to reach out — I'd love to hear about your chess goals!
