About James
I’m a qualified UK teacher and native English speaker with 10 years’ teaching experience. I passed my PGCE with Distinction and have taught in a range of schools in London, working with students of different ages, abilities and backgrounds.
Alongside teaching, I’m a professional writer. I hold an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia (UEA), home to one of the world’s most renowned Creative Writing programmes, where I was awarded a scholarship to study.
That combination of teaching and writing shapes the way I teach English. I’m particularly interested in helping students not only speak accurately, but communicate naturally and confidently — choosing the right words, understanding nuance and expressing what they actually want to say.
I teach students from beginner level through to advanced English, including those preparing for IELTS and Cambridge examinations, as well as students who simply want to improve their English for everyday life, work or study.
I’m patient, relaxed and encouraging, but I also believe in giving useful, specific feedback. My job isn’t simply to have a conversation with you for an hour: it’s to understand where your English is now, where you want it to be, and help you make measurable progress towards it.

Every student learns English for a different reason, so every lesson begins with your goals.
You might be preparing for IELTS or a Cambridge exam, developing your English for work or university, improving your writing, or simply wanting to speak more naturally and confidently in everyday conversation.
Depending on what you need, our lessons can focus on:

For conversation students, we’ll spend plenty of time actually speaking. But this isn’t simply an informal chat with a native English speaker. I’ll listen carefully to how you use English, identify recurring problems and help you improve your vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and natural expression.
For exam students, lessons will be structured around the skills and techniques required for the exam, while also developing the underlying English that will help you beyond the test itself.
And because I’m both a qualified teacher and a professional writer, I can offer particularly detailed support with written English — from sentence structure, grammar and vocabulary to clarity, style and communicating complex ideas effectively.
Most importantly, I want you to leave each lesson with something specific that has improved and something you can actually use.

Details
My standard rate is £30 per hour for one-to-one lessons.
If you’d like to commit to regular lessons, I offer a block of 10 sessions for £250, bringing the cost down to £25 per lesson.
I also offer a free 30-minute introductory session, so we can meet, talk about your goals and see whether I’m the right teacher for you.
Lessons are tailored to your needs, whether you want to improve your conversational English, speak more naturally, develop your writing, prepare for work or study, or simply become more confident using English.
