About Mitchell

I am a qualified secondary school maths teacher based in the UK.

Unlike former teachers, as an active teacher, I am continually evolving and improving my teaching practice every day I set foot in the classroom. My passion for helping my students fills me with joy and satisfaction whenever I see them reach their potential.

Confidence in maths can differ for each person. Being a teacher, I have helped students elevate their mathematical understanding no matter their confidence level. If you would like your confidence to improve and to succeed even further, I will be happy to offer my services.

Each student is different. Hence, our first lesson will explore areas of maths to determine where your confidence lies and where your confidence can improve. It will also be a chance for me to understand ways in which you learn the best to help optimise our future lessons. Having taught 3,000+ lessons in my career, I will pull from multiple ways of teaching particular methods in order to allow you to find the method that suits you.

I will deliver personalised lessons in which we will go over topics and areas in much greater depth and understanding than in a classroom setting. In addition to providing graphics and visuals to help teach certain topics, I will provide a range of questions that can allow methods to be practised and provide stretch and challenge for students wishing to expand their sense of mastery.

I provide online tutoring sessions via Microsoft Teams or Zoom, depending on what you are able to access.

Find out more about Mitchell

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always been interested in maths. My earliest memories of it are playing number games and always wanting to beat my brothers, which probably contributed towards my love for the subject.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Having taught thousands of maths lessons in secondary school to students aged 11 - 18, I am very familiar with maths curriculums as taught in schools. In addition to tutoring concurrently with a student's maths lessons in school, I particularly enjoy elevating students with UKMT problems to deepen their understanding and elevate their creativity when it comes to problem solving.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

An inspiration for becoming a maths teacher/tutor is Mr Williams who taught my maths from the ages of 14 - 18. He was the best teacher I have ever had, and I strive to be that teacher for as many students as possible.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor is proficient at teaching their particular subject, whereas an excellent tutor brings passion and a desire for their students to succeed.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

A student of mine, who lacked confidence in maths, almost cried when she read her maths GCSE grade on results day. Seeing her enormous smile filled me with pride and made every lesson over the two years completely worth it.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One challenge I enjoy helping students with is hitting 'the wall' where they simply aren't getting what is being taught. For example, if a student is having trouble with expanding brackets, if the algebraic approach isn't best suited for them, I might use a geometric model to teach the concept instead.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love learning and I love maths. Bringing these passions together is amazing. I feel like I've got the best job in the world.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Experience as a teacher, a love for my subject, and a want to help others.
