About Helen

Hi! I'm Helen — a native Spanish speaker from Chile, now based in Wellington, and a qualified Spanish teacher who genuinely loves what she does. I specialise in personalised online lessons for teens and adults, from complete beginners to intermediate level. Yes, even if you've never said a word of Spanish before — I've got you.

For high school students, my lessons aren't exam prep — they're focused on real conversation and genuine confidence with the language, ideal if your teen is planning to travel or wants Spanish as a life skill, not just a subject to pass.

Whether you're learning Spanish for an upcoming trip, for work, or simply because you love the language, every lesson is built around your goals — real conversation, everyday expressions, and the confidence to actually use what you learn.

Languages have shaped my whole life. Living and working across different countries taught me that connecting with people through language is one of the most rewarding things you can do — it's the bridge that turns strangers into friends. I bring that same spirit into every lesson: a relaxed, supportive space where you can speak freely, ask anything, and make mistakes without a second thought, because that's exactly how progress happens.

Alongside that real-world experience, I'm also professionally trained — I completed a University Specialisation Course in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language at European University Miguel de Cervantes (UEMC), Spain.

And of course, I love sharing a piece of home along the way — Chilean and Latin American culture, traditions and everyday expressions that bring the language to life. Planning a trip to Chile, or anywhere else in the Spanish-speaking world? I'll help you navigate real conversations — from ordering at a restaurant to chatting comfortably with locals — using natural, everyday Spanish, not just textbook phrases.

My goal? Help you speak Spanish with real confidence, and actually enjoy the ride getting there.

My Spanish lessons

Goal setting & personalised learning
Let's start by talking about what you want to achieve — whether that's travelling with confidence, chatting comfortably with Spanish speakers, or starting completely from zero. Every lesson is built around your goals, not a fixed textbook plan.

Real-life communication
Forget boring grammar drills. We'll dive straight into real conversation, natural pronunciation, useful vocabulary and the kind of expressions native speakers actually use — so you can speak Spanish with confidence, not just understand it on paper.

Travel & cultural Spanish
I love bringing Chilean and Latin American culture into every lesson — traditions, everyday expressions, the little things that make the language come alive. You won't just learn Spanish, you'll start to feel it.

Interactive learning resources
Learning with me never feels flat. I use dynamic tools like Wordwall, Educaplay and Genially, plus videos, music and visual presentations, to keep every lesson fresh, fun and genuinely engaging.

Tracking your progress
Your progress matters to me, and I keep an eye on it every step of the way. We'll regularly check in on how you're doing and fine-tune our lessons to make sure you keep moving forward — so you always feel like you're improving.

Materials after each lesson
After every class, you'll receive the lesson presentation, personalised notes, practice activities and optional homework — so you keep building momentum between lessons, not just during them.

A relaxed and supportive environment
Making mistakes is part of learning, and with me you'll never feel judged for it. I create a warm, pressure-free space where you can relax, speak freely and enjoy every step of the journey.

My goal is simple: by the end of our lessons together, you'll be able to hold a real conversation in Spanish — and genuinely enjoy doing it.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Spanish fluently because it is my native language. I was born and raised in Chile, where Spanish is
part of everyday life, culture, and identity. Although I have always loved languages, my passion for teaching
came later. Over the years, I realised how much I enjoyed helping others learn, which eventually led me to
    become a qualified Spanish teacher.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

As a Chilean, the first names that come to mind are Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral, two Nobel Prize-
winning poets whose work has left a lasting mark on Spanish-language literature. Beyond Chile, I would

also mention Miguel de Cervantes, Federico García Lorca, Pablo Picasso, Antoni Gaudí and Pedro

Almodóvar. Each of them has contributed in a unique way to the richness and diversity of the Spanish-
    speaking world.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

What I love most about Spanish is its diversity. The same language is spoken across many countries, yet
each region has its own expressions, accent, traditions and personality. I enjoy discovering these
differences because they reflect the cultural richness of the Spanish-speaking world and show how
language evolves through history and culture.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Spanish is much more than a language to me; it is my connection to my culture, my family and my roots. It
is also a bridge that connects millions of people across the world. Teaching Spanish allows me to share not
only vocabulary and grammar but also the traditions, history and cultural perspectives that make the
    language so special.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Every student is different, but some common challenges include pronunciation, verb conjugations,
grammar and vocabulary. In my experience, the key to success is regular practice, consistency and
confidence. Learning becomes much easier when students are encouraged to communicate from the
beginning and are not afraid of making mistakes. Language learning is a journey, and every small step
    counts.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Looking back, I think teaching has always been part of who I am. At school, classmates often asked to
borrow my notes before exams because I was organised and enjoyed studying. I also helped friends
prepare for tests and explain topics they found difficult. Later, I helped an adult complete his secondary
education, and when I worked as a sommelier, I often helped restaurant staff improve their English skills.
My mother used to tell me that I should become a teacher one day. I didn't choose that path immediately,
but eventually I followed it and became a qualified Spanish teacher.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Travelling and living abroad have given me a broader understanding of languages and cultures. Having
spent several years in English-speaking countries, I have experienced firsthand the challenges and rewards
of learning and using another language in everyday life. These experiences have helped me become more
patient, empathetic and understanding as a teacher.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I combine professional teacher training with many years of real-world experience working in hospitality,
gastronomy, wine tourism and management. Before becoming a Spanish teacher, I worked as a restaurant
manager in a winery, managed a boutique hotel and spent many years working with people from different
    countries and backgrounds.

I have also travelled extensively and experienced different cultures around the world. These experiences
have helped me understand the challenges language learners face and allowed me to connect easily with
people from diverse backgrounds. Most importantly, I genuinely enjoy helping others learn. My lessons are
tailored to each student's goals, creating a friendly and supportive environment where they can gain
    confidence and enjoy learning Spanish.
