About Sam

I have been a Maths and Economics teacher in the UK and Spain for over 5 years, and I am a teacher who strives to deliver lessons in the clearest and most effective way for my students.

I enjoy seeing students who are having difficulties with a topic grow to the point where they enjoy working through complex problems knowing that they can find a solution to the challenge.

I believe people enjoy being successful and so ensuring students feel successful at every stage of my tutor sessions is a key principle.

Outside of my career in education, I am a keen sportsperson (mainly rugby and squash, but also chess) and traveller, and having lived in Spain for some time, I speak fluent Spanish.

My tutor sessions are commonly one hour long and are made up of the following (though not always - sessions are adaptable to each student):

1. An introduction to a skill or concept (for example: "how to calculate the area of a circle")
2. Clear instruction on the topic using lots of worked examples that get gradually more complex
3. The I/We/You method of modelling examples that results in the student ("You") completing problems independently by the end of the examples
4. Time for practice questions and problem solving questions with opportunities for you ask questions
5. A review of the lesson and recommended independent study materials.

This method is commonly used in high-performing international schools (that I have experience of teaching in). I have used this method to gain students top grades at GCSE, IGCSE and A Level Maths and Economics as well as helping students on the 3/4/5 GCSE borderline grades to secure a 5 or 6 in their exams.

Nobody enjoys struggling with Maths, and my experience with hundreds of students over 5 years of teaching helps me recognise when a student is struggling, and how to overcome this. I find that students enjoy my approach to tutoring because they feel successful every lesson.
