About John
I'm an Irish, QTS-qualified international-school teacher with over eight years of teaching experience, including extensive experience teaching History, Humanities and Cambridge Global Perspectives to students aged 11–18.
I have a PGCE and a degree in Politics & Sociology, and I've worked with students from a wide range of international and English-medium school backgrounds. I particularly enjoy helping students develop the skills that allow them to become more confident and independent learners. Especially critical thinking, research, source analysis and academic writing.
I enjoy tutoring because one-to-one teaching allows me to focus on exactly what an individual student needs. Whether a student is preparing for an important exam, struggling with an assignment, or simply wants to improve their writing and analytical skills, I can adapt lessons to their level, goals and current schoolwork.
My approach is supportive but purposeful: I want students to understand why an answer works, not simply be given the answer. My aim is for students to leave each lesson with a clearer understanding of what they can do and how they can improve.

My lessons are tailored to each student’s individual needs, goals and current schoolwork.
As an experienced international-school teacher, I work with students studying IGCSE/GCSE History, Cambridge Global Perspectives, Humanities and related academic skills. Depending on what a student needs, lessons may involve working through schoolwork or assessments, preparing for an upcoming exam, developing essay and report-writing skills, improving research and referencing, analyzing sources, or building critical-thinking and argument skills.
I usually ask students to share relevant work, assessment criteria or a mark scheme before a lesson where possible. This allows me to focus the session on the specific areas they need to improve rather than reteaching material they already understand.
Lessons are practical and interactive. I may explain a concept or demonstrate a skill, but students will then apply it themselves through exam questions, source analysis, writing activities or discussion. I provide clear feedback and help students understand not just what they need to improve, but how to improve it.
I can also provide focused lessons on particular topics or skills when a student needs additional teaching beyond their schoolwork.
My aim is to help students become more confident, independent learners who understand how to approach their work effectively.
