In my classes, I use a combination of tutorials, where I model thinking computationallyand explain language features and concepts, short practice exercises and longer projects. To help students prepare for AP CSA (Java) free response questions, I provide starter code for released problems, allowing them to test the code they write. I often provide starter code for regular projects as well, so that students can focus on specific aspects of the work.
