About Holly
Hello, prospective students! My name is Holly and I can't wait to be your writing and/or reading comprehension tutor!
I am a grad student with a BA and MA in philosophy, and a professional author with several publications. I started tutoring students while working as a teaching assistant at the University of Toronto. Lot's of undergraduates in the introductory philosophy courses I was marking essays for struggled with the change in standards from high school to university and would appeal to me, as the arbiter of their grades, for help. Often, they thought the issues they were having were particular to philosophy and would ask, “how do I write a good philosophy essay?” As I would tell them, however, the “philosophy” part wasn’t so important: “philosophy” merely pertains to the subject of the essay, but the foundations of a good philosophy essay are the very same foundations for a good essay in any subject: one must have a clear and interesting thesis statement that one provides well-reasoned and convincing arguments for. Subsequently, as a grad student in philosophy with 12+ years experience reading and writing academic essays, I can help you do this, at whatever level in your academic education or standing you find yourself.

After reading and writing academic philosophy for 12+ years, and several publications, I firmly believe that one's ability to write an excellent essay depends, fundamentally, on one's critical thinking skills, and one's ability to construct a clear and interesting thesis statement and provide well-reasoned and convincing arguments for the latter. Subsequently, as a central element in the discipline of philosophy is the development of one's critical thinking skills and the construction of well-reasoned and convincing arguments, my experience puts me in a unique position to help my students get right to the core of what they need to succeed as readers and writers in an academic environment.
Students have come to me be varying levels of education and academic standing and, even at the same levels, can have vastly different needs as burgeoning readers and writers. As a result, I always begin with a writing and/or reading comprehension assessment and a discussion about what my student would like to improve upon so I can tailor my lesson plans to their individual needs. Thus, depending on the student, a lesson may sometimes involve laying down the basics, and other times may focus on more specific issues they are having both in general or on a particular assignment.
While I have mostly tutored undergraduates, the lessons I provide can also be made accessible to high school and middle school student wishing to improve their reading and writing abilities, and will be invaluable in preparing them for reading and writing at a post-secondary level.
