About Piers
About Me: Expert Mentor in Business & Psychology
The Academic Foundation & Real-World Edge
I am a specialist tutor in GCSE Business Studies and Psychology, bringing a unique blend of high-level academic achievement and two decades of professional leadership. I graduated with the Best Overall Performance Prize for my MBA at Imperial College London, and I hold a degree in Psychology from the University of Oxford, with clinical experience as an Assistant Psychologist. I previously worked as an Associate Professor of Healthcare Innovation and Commercialisation at the University of Exeter, and my business career has been spent at the intersection of human behaviour and organisational success.
30 Years of Cross-Sector Experience
Beyond the lecture theatre, I have spent 30 years navigating the complexities of the Private, Public, and Charity sectors. Whether it’s understanding financing a start-up, the stakeholder management of a public body, or the resourcefulness of a not-for-profit, I have "been in the room."
Why I Tutor
I believe that Business and Psychology shouldn't just be subjects you pass; they should be lenses through which you see the world. My goal is to take my "top of the class" academic strategies and my "on the ground" professional insights to help GCSE students:
- Master Complex Theory: From market research to cognitive development.
- Crush the Quantitative: Making Business finance and Psychological statistics intuitive.
- Develop Exam Technique: Sharing the precise analytical skills that earned me top honours at Imperial.
Whether you are struggling to grasp the basics or aiming for a Grade 9, I provide a supportive, high-energy environment designed to build both your grades and your confidence.

Bridging the Gap: Where Theory Meets the Real World
Are you looking to move beyond just memorising textbooks? My lessons are designed for GCSE students who want to truly understand Business Studies and Psychology, rather than just repeating definitions.
With a Psychology degree and experience working as an Assistant Psychologist, I bring a deep scientific understanding of human behaviour. Combined with an MBA and 20 years of leadership experience across the private, public, and charity sectors, I offer a perspective that few tutors can: I have actually lived the theories we are studying.
My Teaching Methodology
I use a "Context-First" approach. Whether we are discussing production processes in Business or social influence in Psychology, I follow a three-step technique:
The 'Why': We start with a real-life scenario (e.g., how a real charity manages its budget or how a clinical psychologist assesses a patient).
The 'How': We map that scenario back to the specific AQA/Edexcel/OCR specification points to ensure exam alignment.
The 'Exam Win': We practise "The Golden Chain" of explanation, linking points together to secure those high-mark "Analyse" and "Evaluate" marks that separate a Grade 5 from a Grade 9.
What My Classes Look Like:
- Duration: Typically 60 minutes. This allows 10 minutes for retrieval practice, 35 minutes for core concept mastery, and 15 minutes for exam-style application.
- Who they are for: Primarily GCSE (Key Stage 4) students, though I am happy to support A-Level students looking for business-world context or psychology fundamentals.
- Interactive Learning: Expect digital whiteboards, real-world case studies from my career, and "active recall" quizzes to ensure the knowledge actually sticks.
Why Choose Me?
I am not a "standard" teacher; I am a practitioner. I understand the pressures of the business world and the complexities of the human mind. My goal is to build your confidence so that when you sit down in that exam hall, you aren't just remembering a page from a book, you’re applying knowledge you actually own.
