About Alex

I am a 22-year-old student who has graduated with a first-class degree in Psychology at the University of Bristol and have been accepted by the University onto a Psychology PhD exploring causal relationships between body mass index (BMI) and mental health measures. Tutoring will help me develop skills in teaching during my PhD and for future careers such as lecturing.

Furthermore, I have genuine enjoyment for teaching and passion for science and would like an opportunity to use this to help others in their education. My tutoring approach can provide a different approach to teaching beyond the classroom in a more personalised manner which is often not possible in conventional classroom teaching.

Typical session length of 1-1.5 hours but flexible to tutees needs.

I teach all Sciences at GCSE level and Biology, Chemistry and Psychology at A-level reflecting the A-levels I took. I am also willing to teach academic writing and quantitative methods and assist in other Sciences such as Physics. I tutor at any range of ability.

Although I am currently based in Bristol, to reach out to a further pool I aim to tutor on online video-conference platforms such as Microsoft teams, zoom, google-meet etc.

Typical sessions will be structured as follows (For a 1-hour session):
1. Introduction (5mins)
2. Recapping on previous session e.g., going through answers in task set at end of last session (5-10mins)
3. Main activities (40mins) split into:
a. Teaching
b. Answering questions with assistance
c. Answering questions with independence
4. Reviewing what was learnt and setting small task to be completed for next session (5-10mins)

I am very enthusiastic about learning and teaching with a unique style e.g., using personalised/familiar analogies to teach scientific ideas to overcome difficulties in grasping often abstract concepts.

I have experience in tutoring GCSE science at the charity 'CoachBright' which provides free tutoring to disadvantaged students around the UK. This informed the need for tutors to be role models to guide and advise tutees personal alongside academic development. This also developed skills in patience and the need to re-approach concepts tutees find difficult in different ways instead of abandoning such areas. I impressed my supervisors who gave me the role of head coach in the second round of tutoring where I overlooked a team of tutors and gave feedback on their sessions. This not only introduced me to different tutoring styles but made me reflect on what approaches work and what potential pitfalls are. For example, stronger tutors consistently asked tutees to demonstrate understanding via specific questions about what was being taught. They were also able to consider factors like tone and confidence in speaking to make the sessions more personable and thus engaging. A key pitfall was simply asking tutees if they understood what was taught with closed questions which is unengaging and fails to identify misunderstanding

Overall, my approach to tutoring is personable, engaging and patient.
