About Ash
My curiosity to learn more about economics was cultivated in the summer of Year 11, as I questioned why disparities in income and wealth have persisted around the globe. Such a divide between the rich and the poor was first illustrated to me after reading Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo’s Poor Economics, with the concept of a poverty trap. In such traps, individuals, communities, or even countries remain trapped in poverty, due to limited resources, opportunities, or savings. The research revealed to me how the risk of expropriation perpetuates these traps, highlighting the critical role of governance in shaping developing countries. This deepened my interest in macroeconomic policy; I became fascinated by its influence on societies worldwide. Moreover, this exploration into the economics behind poverty-ridden regions allowed me to understand the underlying causes and costs of poverty, compelling me to consider potential policies to address these issues. The authors’ mention of a “psychological sunk cost,” where over-subsidised goods are paradoxically underconsumed, underpinned my belief that effective policies were crucial to mitigate these hardships. Consequently, I have chosen to pursue economics to develop and evaluate policies capable of alleviating the difficulties faced by developing nations.

My approach to teaching complex microeconomic and macroeconomic concepts and graphs is by using simple, step-by-step explanations to guide students. I will also refer to real-world examples to ensure students are able to get maximum application marks in their exams
