About Alan
Hello! I'm Alan, and for a couple of years I've been the Principal Bass Trombonist of the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Alongside that, and for a few years prior, I have been an active freelance professional trombone player in Scotland, the UK, and Europe whilst based in Glasgow. I graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2020 with a 1st Class with Honors Bachelor of Music (Performance) degree.
Though I spend most of my time performing in classical orchestras, a lot of my playing experience and work has been in:
- Session recordings (film/TV/video games)
- Musicals
- Big bands/jazz
- Brass bands
- Historic instrument chamber music

As someone with a musical background in a variety of styles and contexts, I put playing the music the learner wants to play at the center of my teaching! I believe that by learning and playing with musicality as the focus, technique and confidence will come.
I like to play in lessons (trombone, or piano for accompanying) as bouncing musical ideas off experienced players is engaging and useful for students, and group play (duets) is a fun way to build aural skills.
I teach:
- Trombone, beginner to university (advanced, grade 8+)
- Music theory as necessary
As a tutor, I have 4+ years of freelance one-on-one experience, including dedicated teaching modules and study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
I also have broad experience running workshops and group classes, across several age groups and levels, through the RCS in primary schools, the Tinderbox Collective in community libraries, and in secondary schools.
Lessons can be:
