About Grisel
More about me... My name is Grisel and I love teaching. My personal goal in life has always been to make this world a bit better, in whatever capacity that may be possible for me to do so. Teaching has been my calling from a very young age. It is one of the ways in which I contribute to the communities around me (physical or cyber communities). It is this love for learning and sharing what I know, that gives me great satisfaction and a wonderful sense of fulfillment. I'm a Spanish native speaker, fluent in English. 10+ years of experience teaching Spanish (middle school, high school and college). BA in Spanish, MA in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language), and additional courses taken on Education (graduate program). I am originally from Uruguay, and moved to the United States with my family at the age of 16 years old. In my teaching, I teach standard American Spanish, a bit different from Spanish from Spain. The difference would be similar to American English and British English. We all understand each other, but we use some different terms in some cases. Accents in Spanish: Spanish cultures have different accents. The same happens in English, as someone from New York (USA) would have a different accent in English compared to someone from Texas (USA). In my teaching, I use a neutral accent Spanish. When I speak Spanish in my personal life, I speak it with the accent characteristic from Uruguay and Argentina. This is called Rioplatense Spanish. "Features of Rioplatense Spanish (AI) Voseo : The use of vos instead of tú. Yeísimo : The pronunciation of ll and y as a soft "zh" sound Aspirated s : The pronunciation of s sounds with aspiration, giving the accent a softer and more melodic quality Intonation : An up-and-down change in intonation mid-sentence, mid-phrase, and mid-word Italian influence : The intonation and general flow of Spanish in Argentina and Uruguay is influenced by Italian" Given that I grew up in Uruguay and I was able to come to the United States at such a young age, makes both cultures intrinsic elements of my identity. I dream in both languages, I think in both languages, I journal in both languages. "Never stop learning" is not just a nice little phrase. It is my passion in life. I continuously research, look up, and discover new information about languages, teaching methods, learning styles and education as a whole. I offer online tutoring for all levels. All lessons are based on individual needs and personal goals. I believe in positive and encouraging teaching styles. Some possible goals to guide the lessons may be: 1. SPEAKING: To improve verbal fluidity in Spanish through conversation with feedback provided. The feedback is discussed with students at the end and also provided in writing. 2. TESTING: To prepare for examinations focus on specific topics, units, grammar points, vocabulary, or verb tenses. Practice and testing strategies are provided as well during the lesson. 3. TRAVEL: To target specific communication points, cultural aspects, and general understanding to prepare before a trip. 4. FUN: To focus on anything that you want, to make your heart sing! Games, short stories, creative writing, poetry, acting, memorizing-practicing lines, debating practice, you name it! 5. ACCENT: Specific points to assess and improve your (other language) accent in Spanish. Different languages have concrete challenges when it comes to pronunciation. We can discuss assessment to isolate these challenges and come closer to the desired outcome.
