About Chris
I am a credentialed educator with 25 years of experience, including 15 years teaching English as a Second Language in Korea. I have taught students of all ages and backgrounds, from elementary through high school, and am passionate about helping learners build confidence in reading, writing, and English language skills. Outside of teaching, I enjoy fly fishing, playing guitar, backpacking, traveling, and spending time with my family. I have visited over 34 countries, which has deepened my appreciation for language, culture, and learning. I currently live in Northern California with my wife and daughter and bring the same dedication and care to tutoring that I bring to my classroom every day.

My Approach as a Tutor
As a tutor, I focus on clear, structured, and supportive instruction that is tailored to each learner’s strengths, needs, and goals. My teaching approach blends explicit instruction with guided practice, allowing students to build skills systematically while gaining confidence and independence. I emphasize clarity, repetition when needed, and practical application so students can immediately use what they learn.
Teaching Methods and Techniques
I use evidence-based strategies drawn from my experience as a general ed. teacher, ESL and special education, including phonics-based reading instruction, direct grammar instruction, modeling of writing tasks, scaffolded support, and frequent checks for understanding. Lessons are adapted for diverse learners, including students with learning differences or language-processing challenges.
Typical Lesson Structure
A typical lesson begins with a brief review and goal-setting. Instruction is then delivered in focused segments, followed by guided practice and feedback. Lessons conclude with independent practice or application and a short review to reinforce learning and track progress.
What Sets Me Apart
What sets me apart is my 25 years of teaching experience, including 15 years teaching internationally, combined with advanced training in special education and autism support. I am a currently practicing, credentialed educator who understands how to differentiate instruction effectively.
Who My Lessons Are For
My lessons are designed for students from elementary through high school who need support in English Language Arts, including, reading, writing, grammar, academic English, creative and advanced essay writing. I work with English language learners, students in general education, and students who benefit from structured, individualized instruction, including those with learning differences. Lessons are tailored to each student’s grade level, skill level, and learning goals.
