About Eric
For over 30 years, I have been a professional conductor and violist. I served as Music Director and Conductor of the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra from 2015–2022, founded and conducted the Juno-nominated group of 27 Chamber Orchestra, and performed as guest conductor and violist with orchestras around the world, including the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Les Violons du Roy, and the Canadian Opera Company, among many others. This rich experience in the classical music world informs everything I do as an educator. I am passionate about sharing both the technical and artistic aspects of music. My lessons blend real-world conducting and performance insights with deep knowledge of classical music history, score study, and repertoire. Whether you are preparing for exams, developing conducting skills, or simply exploring the depth of classical music, I provide structured, encouraging lessons that help students gain confidence and grow as musicians. Students can feel reassured knowing that lessons are built on a foundation of professional expertise, delivered in a clear, inspiring, and approachable way. My goal is always to create a welcoming space where curiosity, practice, and artistry come together to deepen understanding and enjoyment of music.

About My Lessons
My teaching approach is rooted in making classical music and conducting both accessible and deeply engaging. Whether I am working with a university student preparing for exams, an aspiring conductor learning score study, or a music lover eager to deepen their understanding, I tailor each lesson to the student’s goals and experience level.
Methodology & Techniques:
- For conducting, we focus on score analysis, baton technique, rehearsal strategies, and musical interpretation. I use a mix of practical exercises, video analysis, and repertoire study so students gain both technical control and expressive freedom.
- For classical music history, I guide students through major periods, styles, and composers, always connecting historical context to the living sound of the music. Lessons often involve listening assignments, score excerpts, and discussion that spark curiosity and critical thinking.
A Typical Lesson Plan:
- Warm-up or review of previous concepts
- Introduction of new material (technique, historical theme, or repertoire)
- Guided practice or analysis together
- Independent assignment or listening focus for the week
What Sets Me Apart:
As a professional conductor and lifelong educator, I bring the perspective of someone who has lived the music on stage and in rehearsal halls, working with orchestras, choirs, and ensembles in a wide range of settings. My lessons are practical, inspiring, and always connected to the real-world artistry of making music, while remaining approachable and encouraging for learners at every level.
Who These Lessons Are For:
- Undergraduate and graduate music students (exam preparation, advanced study)
- Aspiring or early-career conductors looking for personalized coaching
- Musicians and educators who want to deepen their knowledge of repertoire and history
- Curious music lovers who want to explore the richness of classical music in a guided way
