About Mark
My musical journey began over 25 years ago as a multi-instrumentalist and session musician in the vibrant 90s Brit-Pop scene in Bristol, England. To deepen my practical knowledge, I pursued formal training, attending The Guitar Institute (ICMP) and earning a Grade 8 Music Theory certification. This unique blend of stage-tested performance skills and deep theoretical understanding forms the core of my teaching philosophy today (and the foundation of my guitar academy). I believe learning should be as fun as it is educational, and my ultimate passion is helping students combine these elements to unlock their own unique voice on the guitar.

My goal for every lesson is to create a supportive and engaging partnership that helps you find joy and unlock your full potential on the fretboard. The entire experience is built around you—your goals, your tastes, and your unique learning style.
Our First Lesson: Your Musical Blueprint
Our journey begins with a conversation. I listen first to understand exactly where you are and where you want to go. Whether your goal is to play your favorite songs, write your own music, or master improvisation, we will use our first session to build a personalized roadmap. This fun, no-pressure plan will guide our future lessons and ensure that everything we do is directly connected to achieving your musical ambitions.
What a Typical Lesson Looks Like
While every lesson is tailored to you, we will generally follow a core structure. We’ll begin by reviewing your practice from the previous week, celebrating successes and working through any challenges. From there, we will introduce a new concept or technique—always in the context of your goals. We immediately apply that new skill to a real song or a fun musical exercise. To make learning dynamic, we will use modern tools like apps and websites that provide backing tracks, transforming simple exercises into engaging musical conversations that train your ear and sense of rhythm.
A Path for Every Player
I have a proven approach for students at any point in their journey:
For Beginners, our focus is on making music right away. We will get you playing your first full songs using essential chords, mastering core techniques, and building an effective 10-minute daily routine to ensure you see consistent progress and build good habits for life.
For Intermediate Players, my specialty is breaking through plateaus. We will diagnose what's holding you back, work to truly unlock the entire fretboard beyond memorized shapes, and master the art of improvisation so you can express your own musical ideas.
Every lesson is built on my unique background as a UK-certified professional with Grade 8 Music Theory and extensive experience as a former Guitar Center lead instructor. This allows me to provide a structured, effective, and encouraging learning environment designed to help you succeed.
