About Mark
I started playing guitar decades ago. Music has always been my passion and being a great musician has always been the focus - guitar is simply my main instrument. I also play (to varying degrees) lap steel, slide, bass, dulcimer, banjo, keyboards, and drums.
During my time I have had the honor of playing with and studying under some well-known musicians. I have also worked as a producer and recording engineer for numerous independent artists.
A little over 10 years ago I decided to make teaching my primary focus, showing students things that I wish someone had pointed out to me when I was younger.

I teach both theory and technique using music you want to play. I believe students should understand what they are playing, why the music works, and what they can do with it creatively. Understanding the structure of songs also makes them easier to remember, and opens the door to improvisation and creating your own songs.
I hold regular recitals where students can perform with a professional backing band in a private setting. Music is meant to be shared, not just played solo in your bedroom. This gives students the opportunity to interact with other students and form their own bands.

I am a current student of Mark's. I started taking guitar lessons again after a very long hiatus, so I wasn't starting as an absolute beginner.
Mark is a knowledgeable, patient, and very capable teacher. The thing I appreciate about the time I spend with Mark is he not only makes me a better guitar player, he makes me a better musician. Through Mark, in addition to regular lessons where I learn technique and playing through changes, I have been able to do live performances, composition, recording, and event management.
It is hard to go wrong with Mark. He is a very experienced guitar player and musician, willing to encourage and engage across all facets of musicianship.I have been learning with Mark for over 8 years now. I have learned so much from him, including foundational skills, exploring new genres, and being able to practice performing on stage. Mark really works to build lessons and exercises around what specific needs his students have. For me, I've been learning a lot of simple, foundational techniques that can help me grow to be a stronger guitar player. I started with just playing four-chord pop songs, to learning how to improvise to different backing tracks. Mark is an amazing teacher, and he has always supported me to try something new! If anyone is looking for a guitar teacher, he is the best I know.
Mark is the most caring and involved teacher I’ve ever had. He focuses on helping the student develop a passion for music and discover their own sound rather than teach by a book. That being said, he extensively covered fundamentals and theory and taught me so much about music production and sound engineering. He hosts recitals for his students, which gave so much confidence in performing and helped me put together a band. Amazing and life changing teacher!

Lessons in my home studio (North San Jose) are $95/hour, or $60/half hour.
Rates for lessons in your home vary based on the travel area.
There are no additional fees - recitals are free, no materials required to purchase (other than your instrument), and I NEVER raise rates on a student - the rate you start at continues for as long as you take lessons.
(Naturally my rates for new starting students have increased with inflation, but students always keep their rate for as long as they take lessons)
