About Michael
Michael Zahlit is an active performer and teacher in Austin, Texas. He has performed with the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Austin Lyric Opera, and is assistant principal violist of the Central Texas Philharmonic.
Michael has been principal violist and member of the Eastern Symphony Festival Orchestra, DePaul Symphony Orchestra, Interlochen Philharmonic, the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, Northbrook Symphony, Dubuque Symphony, and Wisconsin Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also performed with New World Symphony, and under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas, Tedddy Abrams, Michael Stern, Carl St. Clair, and Joann Faletta. He has played with esteemed soloists such as Augustin Hadelich, Sarah Chang, George Li, Robert Chen, Orion Weiss, Lara St. John, Andres Diaz, Geoff Nuttal, and Alessio Bax.
As both a soloist and orchestral player, Michael was a recipient of the Collier Quartet Fellowship at the Britt Music Festival and selected to perform in international music festivals, including the Aspen Music Festival, National Repertory Orchestra, Madeline Island, Montecito, Eastern, Interlochen, and Green Mountain Chamber Music Festivals and as well as the Haydn Music Festival held in Vienna, Austria.
Michael has had the pleasure to work with and be coached by the Shanghai Quartet, Anton Nel, American Quartet, Miro Quartet, Arianna Quartet, Ilya Kaler, Robert Vernon, Don McInnes, Paul Coletti, and Joseph Silverstein. Michael graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with his Bachelor's in Music under the tutelage of Roger Myers and received his Master’s in music at DePaul University with Rami Solomonov and Wei-Ting Kuo.

I like to tailor my lessons to my students goals/needs. I want to make sure the technical studies we're doing (etudes, scales, pedagogue books) overlap and support the pieces we're trying to tackle as well!
Typically I like to start a lesson with asking what went well/ and what we need help with from our week of practice.
We move onto technique or scales to see how that's coming.
We then work on whatever pieces you're playing, and break down areas where we're having the most trouble.
We talk through performance practice of pieces and being able to take it to the next level.
Finally, the last 5 minutes or so I like to have us write down what our goals for the week are, how we're structuring our practice, and the expectations of what to bring next week.
I do have background growing up with Suzuki Method and teaching Suzuki method especially for beginners. I find it has many great ways to get students up and playing as quick as possible. However there's lot of great teaching methods out there and it's just one of them.
