My main goal with teaching chess is making it fun for my students! Chess is amazing because it is a great way to exercise your brain while also having a good time playing. With my students, I want to foster a strong desire to learn and grow in chess and in life.
My teaching methods depend on the student and their skill level, but typically my first goal is to assess your current chess knowledge/skills, then design a lesson plan that starts at your level.
My lessons will typically include an explanation of a chess technique, idea, or strategy, followed by an activity to test that idea in a puzzle. From there, we can repeat with new ideas, play practice games, or analyze a previous game.
Topics I cover include (but are not limited to) :
- How pieces move
- Main objectives of chess
- How to checkmate
- Special rules: castling and en-passant
- Understanding opening, mid-game, and endgame
- Opening theory and main goals
- Spotting tactics: pins, skewers, forks, overloaded pieces, deflection, zugzwang, in-between moves.
- Important endgames to master
- Famous games and the art of chess
- Using the engine to analyze games and positions
