About Alex
I started cello later than many musicians, and that experience deeply shaped how I teach. I remember what it feels like to feel behind, to push through frustration, and to build real skill step by step. Because of that, I bring both the discipline of conservatory training and a deep respect for individual growth at any stage. My goal is to meet each student where they are and help them move forward with clarity, confidence, and encouragement.
Over the years I’ve performed across a wide range of musical styles—from traditional classical repertoire to pop, rock, ambient, and electric cello performance. That range informs how I teach. Whether you're a complete beginner or an advanced player, our work together will be focused, clear, and tailored to your personal goals. We will build strong technical foundations while also exploring the music that genuinely excites you, whether that means Bach, Billie Eilish, or something entirely your own.
I hold a Master’s Degree from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, where I studied with Alan Stepansky, former Principal Cellist of the New York Philharmonic. I have more than ten years of professional performing and teaching experience. At age eighteen I appeared as a soloist with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and I have since worked as a freelance orchestral musician in the Buffalo area and served as Guest Principal Cellist with the Rock Hill Symphony Orchestra in South Carolina. My performing experience also includes work outside the classical world. I performed with the Eagles in 2022 at KeyBank Center as part of the cello section and have appeared as an electric cellist on the main stage of the Music Is Art Festival in 2023, 2024, and 2025. I have attended the Sitka Cello Seminar and Sitka Music Festival, performed on a Naxos recording of Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht with the National Music Festival Orchestra, and collaborated with Robbie Takac of the Goo Goo Dolls at GCR Audio.
My teaching style is supportive, intuitive, and highly personalized. I believe that many string-playing challenges come from fundamental mechanics, particularly the bow arm, so much of our work focuses on tone production, efficiency, and healthy technique. I also help students learn how to practice effectively with clear structure and encouraging strategies so that progress feels achievable rather than overwhelming. Lessons often include tone development, bow technique, strengthening fundamentals, building musical confidence, and creating effective practice routines. Students interested in broader styles can also explore electric cello, pedals, looping, crossover repertoire, improvisation, and creative expression.
I have taught students of many ages and backgrounds, from young beginners to adults returning to the instrument after many years away. My students have successfully auditioned into youth orchestras, All-County ensembles, and community orchestras. I work with adult beginners who are discovering the instrument for the first time, returning musicians who want to rebuild their skills, and serious students who are looking to refine technique and deepen their musical understanding.
Lessons are typically sixty minutes so that we have enough time to work deeply and make meaningful progress each week. At this time I am offering online lessons only and am currently accepting a limited number of remote students.
Most importantly, I genuinely care about my students. I aim to create a supportive and motivating environment where students feel encouraged, respected, and excited about their musical development. If you are looking for a teacher who combines high-level training with clear guidance and a warm, encouraging approach, I would be happy to work with you.

Lessons are personalized to each student’s level and goals, focusing on tone, technique, and effective practice strategies. Students may also explore improvisation, electric cello, and modern styles. My goal is steady progress, confidence, and helping each student develop their own musical voice.
