About John

I’m a professional working artist with over 12 years of experience. I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree, and my work has been exhibited in multiple gallery spaces and a museum. I was also awarded a near full-ride scholarship to Maryland Institute College of Art.

I teach traditional and contemporary drawing and painting, working primarily with graphite, charcoal, and pastel, as well as acrylic and oil paint. My lessons often focus on realism, figurative work, portraiture, surrealism, and abstraction. I help students build a strong foundation in traditional techniques while also encouraging more expressive, stylized approaches.

Alongside my own studio practice, I help students build their skills with clarity and confidence - whether that means learning fundamentals, developing a personal style, or creating a strong portfolio for school and scholarship opportunities. I understand what art programs are looking for and can guide students in presenting their work in a way that stands out. My goal as a tutor is not only to improve technical ability, but to help each student grow into their own creative voice.

My lessons are designed to be approachable, structured, and tailored to each individual student. Whether you're picking up a pencil for the first time or looking to refine your skills, I create a safe space to express yourself where you can improve quickly while still enjoying the process. My lessons focus on building your technical skills while also developing your own artistic style and voice through demonstrations, curriculum, and feedback that pushes your work to the next level.

Typical Lesson Structure:
1. Project Overview (5 Minutes)
We begin by outlining the focus of the session. What we’ll be working on, why it matters, and what the end goal is.

2. Demonstration & Instruction (10 minutes)
I introduce the core concept of the lesson through a step-by-step demonstration. This may include techniques such as breaking forms into shapes, understanding light and shadow, or approaching specific subjects like portraits, abstractions, etc. tailored to the student's personalized curriculum.

3. Studio Time / Guided Practice (30 - 40 minutes)
Students spend the majority of the session actively working on their piece while I provide real-time guidance, corrections, and support. This is where the most growth happens - through doing, not just observing.

4. Review & Feedback (10 Minutes)
We conclude the lesson by reviewing the work created during the session. I provide clear, constructive feedback, highlight strengths, and offer specific suggestions for improvement, along with optional exercises to continue progress outside of class.
