About Michael
I have no formal conservatoire training but have worked consistently for the last 10 years as an actor, and actor-musician.
I began acting at the age of 30, and was selected as a member of Northern Stage's (Newcastle upon Tyne) inaugural NORTH programme. Through this, I helped to set up a theatre company, The Letter Room, which creates new musical theatre and has toured nationally.
As a professional actor, I have worked extensively at Northern Stage, including their 2018 production of The Last Ship (Sting) which toured nationally. I have most recently performed at Theatre by the Lake in their 2022/23 production of The Borrowers.
I graduated from University of Northumbria in 2006 in Joint Honours English Literature and Film Studies (2:1).

I like to tailor my approach to each individual student as I find no particular technique works for everyone. I want to help every student find their own way of approaching text and acting that helps THEM to be alive, present and a collaborative member of an ensemble, who is there to tell a story.
I also focus holistically on the skills required to manage the life of being an actor, particularly self-care and mental health. Lessons are typically 60 minutes and are usually structured as follows:
Check in
Warm up physical (connecting with body and natural rhythms)
Warm up: Vocal.
Technical work appropriate to ongoing projects (including text work, finding meaning through movement, discussion, improvisation)
Performance/show back
Check out
Planning for next session, setting or modifying aims and intentions.
As a graduate of Northern Stage's NORTH programme which focused on making your own work, I am able to provide tuition and advice on making your own work, as well as devising ensemble creation.
