All students have a different learning style. I teach students HOW to learn in a way that works for them. We explore strategies for effective and efficient test taking, reading comprehension, taking notes, and writing responses that reflect individual learning styles.
In short, we focus on the Executive Function skills that enable students to meet goals in a timely manner and retain and apply learned information.
Lesson flow: Students explain areas of challenge, I suggest a variety of strategies, student tries strategies with me and then practices those that seem to work best through the week. We check in throughout the week to see if there is anything that needs to be tweaked, or how things are going. Are their obstacles and how can student address them?
We focus on one or two challenges at a time. All students have strengths and we focus on using their strengths to inform how to approach areas that are more difficult.
Pacing is appropriate to each student. The focus is on learning strategies so that student can be independent and apply them to all content areas in order to achieve academic success or more success in life skills.
