About Matt
I’m a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt with over 30 years of grappling experience and 12+ years of teaching students from all walks of life. My martial arts journey began at age 6 with judo, where I earned my brown belt before moving into no-gi jiu-jitsu under UFC veterans Carlos Newton and Mark Bocek. In my late teens, I shifted my focus to traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, training under Cesar Rezek of Nova Uniao—one of the most respected teams in the world. I was awarded my black belt at Nova Uniao’s headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, the same mats that produced legends like Jose Aldo and Renan Barao. I also spent close to a year in Brasilia training under Joao Roque, 1997 World Champion and a pioneer in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Outside of training, I co-founded Jits Magazine, one of the leading BJJ media platforms globally, with millions of views and readers across Brazil, Japan, Thailand, Abu Dhabi, and beyond. That work has taken me around the world—training, competing, and sharing jiu-jitsu with people from all walks of life. Whether you're brand new to grappling or have been rolling for years, I bring a detailed, thoughtful approach to every session—tailoring coaching to help you build skill, confidence, and a love for the art. I offer private Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu lessons across Montreal, with each session customized to match your personal goals — whether you're aiming to get in shape, learn self-defense, or prep for competition. We'll focus on what matters most to you, and build a path that fits your pace and lifestyle. What You Can Expect from a Lesson: - A mobility warm-up to get your body ready - Technique drills tailored to your experience level - Sparring/rolling — light or intense, totally your call - Optional fitness or conditioning add-ons Every class is flexible. Some students want a technical deep dive, others want to break a sweat and go hard — it’s entirely up to you. Who Can Train? Anyone — seriously. I’ve worked with toddlers, seniors, total beginners, and seasoned athletes. Your age, fitness level, flexibility, or experience doesn't matter. Jiu-jitsu is for everyone, and it meets you exactly where you are. Whether you're brand new or have years on the mats, I’ll make sure the experience is safe, motivating, and — most importantly — fun.
