About Krisztina
Why should you study Arabic with me, rather than with a native speaker?
The answer is straightforward: I specialize in Classical Arabic and premodern Christian Arabic and Judaeo-Arabic—varieties whose native speakers lived centuries ago. Contemporary Arabic speakers are native speakers of modern vernaculars such as Egyptian, Moroccan, or Sudanese Arabic; these vernaculars relate to Classical Arabic much as French or Italian relate to Latin.
My training in Arabic began many years ago. I completed a demanding program in Budapest, followed by a year at a language school in Damascus. I then spent five years in Jerusalem studying premodern Muslim Arabic, Judaeo-Arabic, and Christian Arabic texts, while I supported myself by cataloguing Arabic manuscripts.
Since then, I have continued to work with premodern Arabic texts, while teaching students and scholars at various stages of their careers.

What kind of Arabic do you want to learn?
Among the many types of Arabic, I specialise in teaching the premodern varieties: Classical Arabic, Qur’anic Arabic, Christian Arabic (including Karshuni) and Judaeo-Arabic, along with training in reading medieval and early modern Arabic manuscripts.
My method is grounded in two pillars: a solid command of grammar and a broad vocabulary. With those in place, you can read premodern texts with precision and, in time, at remarkable speed.
For researchers—postgraduates, postdocs, and established scholars—the most efficient path is almost always targeted study. Rather than beginning with a general Arabic course, you can move much faster by working directly on the texts or genres you need for your research while mastering the grammatical foundations as you go.

Perfect! Krisztina is by far the best teacher I’ve met when it comes to Arabic grammar, especially Classical Arabic grammar. I met Krisztina more than 20 years ago, when I was a postdoc in the US and she was a PhD student. She helped me read through Arabic philosophical texts from the Middle Ages. She understood the (to me) nearly incomprehensible texts with ease and explained them to me with endless patience.. She is conscientious, knowledgeable, nice--the perfect tutor.

Traveling to Egypt for work time to time, I wanted to be able to read newspapers and follow news on radio and TV. Details
The initial consultation is not a lesson and should not be booked through this system. Its purpose is simple: for us to meet, talk, and for me to understand both your Arabic level and your goals. Whenever possible, this meeting takes place in person, even if later lessons will be online. There is no charge for this consultation.
Lesson fees vary depending on the level of instruction required. The minimum fee is £60 per lesson. For lessons held in person, any travel time will need to be discussed and agreed upon in advance.
If you prefer to learn in a small group—and reduce your individual cost—you are welcome to form a group of students who wish to study together, either online or in person.
For parents or guardians interested in lessons for children: I hold an enhanced DBS certificate, which I am happy to show at our first meeting.
I follow a 24-hour cancellation policy. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the lesson will be charged in full.
To ensure that I can review and correct your homework in time for each session, please submit it at least 24 hours before the lesson.
