About Sophia
Experience
I am highly selective in the students which I tutor due to high demand for my services and the time I spend catering towards each individual student’s academic needs so that I can ensure they maintain a high ranking and have a comprehensive understanding of English. I see my role as a tutor not limited to providing weekly lessons and extensive feedback, but also as a mentor and guide who is reliable, provides timely feedback even with short notice (which my students have found is essential during HIGH-STRESS EXAM PERIODS), and caters extensively to my students’ schedules and areas they are struggling with. By taking on less students, my intention is to ‘raise’ my students as a tutor and highly-experienced mentor through Year 11 and 12 until they graduate with top-marks.
Therefore, I am only willing to tutor students who I believe have the ambition, drive and basic skills to surpass their absolute potential with me and achieve Band 6 level results.
I have tutored students in English Advanced to Extension 2, however, I am a specialist in English Extension 1 and 2. Using my teaching experience, as well as my own personal experience completing Extension 2 and being published in Young Writers, I provide extensive feedback, theoretical guidance, and mentor ship to ensure that my students’ major works excel and meet NESA’s often enigmatic conditions that separate the highest-mark pieces from the rest of the cohort.
Qualifications
PRIMARY SCHOOL GROUP CLASSES: Under my secondary company that I own, 'Artemis Academics', I conduct primary school group classes (with a maximum of 5 students in each class) for (1) Selective Trial Courses for Reading and Writing; (2) Reading courses; & (3) Writing courses.
Artemis Writing Course details:
Teaching and Learning Framework
The Artemis Writing course is based around the study of a series of ten novels chosen from the Newbery Medal collection. As the ‘Nobels’ of its genre, these books are selected annually by the American Literary Association for their significant contribution to the genre of children’s literature. By using Newbery Honor books as the basis for study, we ensure that students are able to develop their reading comprehension, essay writing, creative writing and persuasive skills using texts that are both enjoyable and enriching. The Artemis Writing course incorporates a constructivist approach into our classroom setting, focusing particularly on group discussions around big concepts led by a world-class mentor in order to encourage students to become more critical readers and better writers.
The Artemis Writing course models the ways in which students will interact with literary texts and ideas in senior study. The course has been designed specifically to correspond to the HSC syllabus and its increasing emphasis on the practical writing skills required of the new The Craft of Writing module.
Acquired Skills
Students will become critical readers with a solid grasp on fundamental literary concepts such as themes, characterisation and language analysis.
Students will become independent writers who can produce and discern between different types of writing, with a focus on persuasive writing, creative writing, speech writing, and essay writing.
Students will be introduced to key literary themes in time and will learn how to articulate and initiate a discussion about these themes with their peers and teachers in a classroom setting and beyond.
Students will begin to understand the interactions between different forms of literature through the comparative study of novels, speeches, poems and films.
Homework and Assessment
After each class, students are given homework booklets that reflect and expand on classroom knowledge. By completing the homework, students put into practice specific skills and ideas from inside the classroom and develop the necessary independent time management skills which are crucial for higher forms of learning.
A homework booklet typically contains:
- a revision section where students improve on a piece of writing from the previous week according to teacher feedback.
- a short answer section where students answer questions about class content
- a writing section where student produce an extended answer based on either a literary form (such as essay-writing, creative writing, etc.) and/or a theme.
Homework booklets are returned to students with specific feedback pertaining to each question. By reflecting on the feedback and actively improving on areas of weakness in the revision section of the following week’s homework, students will learn how to consolidate knowledge and develop the skills to become more independent writers.
HIGH SCHOOL:
I have extensive experience in tutoring Band 6 level HSC and year 11 students in English Advanced, English Extension 1 and 2 for 4 years. I ranked 10TH IN THE STATE FOR ENGLISH EXTENSION 2, ACHIEVED 48/50 FOR EXTENSION 1 AND 97/100 for English Advanced. I maintained FIRST IN MY SELECTIVE SCHOOL COHORT in ALL ENGLISH SUBJECTS (UP TO 4U). I have worked extensively in private one-to-one tutoring as well as with well-known academic colleges in group tutoring.
I have resources (including previous Band 6 essays, creative pieces and reflection pieces I completed) that I am incredibly happy to share with my future students - this includes but is not limited to: Band 6 (full-mark) essays, discursives and creative pieces; text-specific guides to aid with analysis and understanding; as well as practice papers and questions.
As I have recently experienced the ordeals of the HSC that my students now face, I will provide study tips and advice on how to maximise your ATAR and work towards your dream course.
