About Loren
Classically educated, an erudite, and a long time bibliophile, I am well versed in English and Comparative Literary Studies. I have also written several novels and speak several languages. I understand the importance of being understood. Oral expression is the basis of all social communication. Knowing how to speak casually, professionally and formally, can make the difference in the opportunities presented to you. I have been very active in Language Exchange in order to understand how to teach English to others. It's important that an instructor understand the perspective of their student and cater every lesson to the most efficient learning for their style.

In my teaching experience I have learned to be flexible. Not all students learn the same way. Not all students have the same goals. Not all students fit into a box of the standard styles of learning. For example, I was working with a student from Kiev, Ukraine. He had spent a lot of time in Moscow, and even enjoyed a semester in Brooklyn, New York. This effected his perception of the English language. He was more interested in casual speech, so we focused on English idioms and tongue twisters. This was an entirely different curriculum from say..... a student from China with very limited English speaking capability. Her English was so limited, that I could not even ask her where in China she was from! She needed to improve her English fast because she had a job as a waitress and her lack of English speaking skills were keeping her tips low! So I grabbed a wipe board and some flashcards and we constructed English lessons using the power of pictures. We discussed everything from, counting currency, to asking about the weather, learning the names of family titles, to asking about a customer's health. Although she could not share with you complex concepts like climate change and politics, she now had the confidence to carry on basic conversations. Despite starting with nothing more than an understanding of "Hello, Goodbye, Check Please...yes...no" she now had the skills to truly engage with her customers! I had another student who was from Thailand, spoke English as a third language, and was training to be a nurse in the States. He spoke decent English, but struggled with medical terminology. Because of our mutual understanding of the Japanese language, we were able to apply the power of memory techniques to memorize complicated medical practices effortlessly. Whatever your goals, whatever your situation, whatever your native language, I can work with you and make you a better English speaker.

In order to provide the best service possible, the first half hour of the first lesson will be an assessment of your current proficiency level. This free 30 minute assessment will help me understand how best to present your lessons and cater them to your specific learning style. From this assessment I can draw up a lesson plan and will require you to prepare for your first actual lesson! This is important because depending on your level as well as your goals, will determine precisely the length of each lesson that will be best for you. Some beginners do best with 15-20 minute lessons while advanced learners can work for as long as an hour without tiring. When determining your specific rate, 4 15 minute lessons would mean that you are only paying $5/lesson as a beginner. I strongly suggest that more advancers learners pay for the bulk of their lessons upfront in order to bring down their hourly rate to $10-$15/lesson. Once we schedule a lesson, you can cancel and/or reschedule up to 24hours before our scheduled time. (This includes the free 30 minute assessment and free 30 minute lesson). My commitment as well as your commitment is very important and we shall honor our time and your money invested.
