About IAN
Hi, there world! My name is Ian and I’m a graduate of Bristol University (MSci Maths & Physics). I’ve been a tutor for over a decade now, teaching one-to-one in the Plymouth area, and online to students across the UK.
If you’re looking for a knowledgeable, creative, fun-loving tutor who helps to transform lives and realise every ounce of a student’s potential—then you`ve come to the right place!
With my deep understanding, unwavering passion, and a clear sense of conscientiousness—I’ve helped students from all walks of life. Whether it be 11+, KS3, GCSE, A-Level, or even University. I’ve taught most, if not all, of the British syllabi (AQA, OCR, Edexcel).
In addition, I’ve helped students pass entry-level exams, such as GAMSAT. And at the undergraduate level, I’ve seen students studying for degrees in physics, mathematics, economics, chemistry, mechanical engineering and optometry.
My students have since gone onto all manner of occupations! A few have become doctors. Others have gone on to vocational courses, such as brick-laying. Some are now engineers working in industry. A few are in the I.T. sector, with specializations such as cyber security. My most dedicated students have made it into Oxford University, Imperial College and LSE—to name a few. They worked hard for them!
I really enjoy tutoring. It`s a privilege meeting people in the comfort of their homes, sharing what has been a lifelong passion of mine, and making a genuinely positive impact on their future.
Whether you’re a parent with an inquisitive 12-year-old, an A-Level student aspiring toward further education, or an adult learner looking for a career transition. I treat every individual on a case-by-case basis, welcoming the diversity of ages, backgrounds and abilities.
It’s great to see you all, and I look forward to hearing from you!

A Little About Me
__________________
In case you`re wondering... I grew up here in Plymouth. Having attended Hyde Park Junior School, Coombe Dean Secondary School and Bristol University. I graduated with an MSci in Maths & Physics, specialising in theoretical physics for my final year. I was supervised by a Dirac Medal-winning physicist at the time, which proved quite a formative experience!
I’ve been tutoring ever since—and it’s certainly taught me a lot over the years: affording me a great deal of introspection, some much-needed autonomy, and the experience of running a successful business.
In my spare time, I study… many, many things. I’ve always been curious about what can be achieved with the right environment, instruction and impetus. I`m fascinated by human potential, developmental psychology, and the philosophy in which people conduct themselves.

Tutoring Approach
____________________
I’m down-to-earth, highly inquisitive and very excitable! I actively promote a culture of openness, curiosity and freedom of expression. There are no stupid questions—I enjoy mulling over seemingly obvious points. They’re often the most revealing, where students genuinely need attention and some of the deepest insights can be gleaned.
I’m naturally creative in temperament, building from the ground up and recognising connections across disparate material. Finding the best way to communicate those insights can be a lot of fun—and there’s plenty of inspiration to be found in the one-to-one environment.
I strongly emphasise the use of language. It`s an incredibly important part of our cognitive faculty—and serves as an invaluable tool for expression, comprehension and retention. If you can`t articulate what you`ve "learned", then you probably haven`t mastered it yet!
I`m very much of the opinion that, if you`re not having fun—you`re doing something wrong! Education should be empowering, exciting and rewarding. Fun is an intrinsic part of that!
Creativity is essential—you`ve got to make the ideas your own, think critically, and imagine the implications in a wider context. What does this say about the world? Can we view this from another angle? How can we use this?
It`s central to my approach then—to provide an environment where students feel like they get to discover what they learn. It`s important they have the opportunity to come to terms with the material.
So... try to keep an open mind. Stay true to yourself, fire up those brain cells—and prepare to have your conceptual map forever expanded!

My lessons are fast, engaging, and fun! I teach from the ground up—striving to achieve the greatest breadth of material, whilst simultaneously developing the greatest depth of understanding.
I find numerous approaches toward developing concepts and demonstrate how they relate to the wider context. I encourage my students to think for themselves, critique the world around them and imagine the implications of their assertions.
I foster an environment where students discover knowledge out of curiosity and insight, as opposed to swallowing knowledge out of expectation and pressure.
