About John
Having trained to Grade 8 level in both Piano & Violin, I have over 20 years of experience being on the student end of learning music, hence no stranger to the common pitfalls facing new learners.
From working in ensembles such as the DYO & UCD Symphony Orchestras, along with several years of having given 1-on-1 piano tutoring, I've found that clear and effective communication is key in how we shape our expression of music.
I see so many people, from young kids up to adulthood, struggle with their relationship to music and their instrument. For me personally, it was only after embracing the piano on my own terms that I truly felt a weight lift. I shifted focus to engaging with music for it's own sake, in parallel to the classical grade system. While I do recognise the benefit this system can provide, I still believe that it is eclipsed by the importance of understanding the application of the underlying theory & developing a personal connection between the musician and the music.
At the end of the day, we play and listen to music because of how it makes us feel. So the primary goal is to open up the many ways for us to express these feelings at the piano, perhaps even discovering some new ones in the process.

With each of my students, our overall goal is to develop a sense of real confidence and joy at the piano, irrespective of the level. Though the way in which we achieve this specifically can vary from student to student of course - the primary areas that I tend to focus on are;
Familiarity with Fundamentals,
Theory & Harmony (Demystifying the jargon!),
Classical Study involving Sheet Music,
Targeted Technique Development,
Improvisation & Accompaniment
I've seen firsthand that given a targeted and intentional approach to these areas, many students really thrive and suddenly find themselves capable not only of what they had hoped for originally but suddenly realising their ability to discover new aspects and styles of music all on their own!
We can do lessons of 30 mins(€15) or 60 mins(€22), whichever suits best. In addition, the first lesson is completely free, so there's no need to commit to anything right away :)
So, welcome to students of all ages and levels! I personally find a special delight in rekindling the passion of students that are coming back to the piano after a time away. At the same time it's forever rewarding to boost the morale of currently independent intermediate learners and to spark a passion in new beginners too!
