About Megan
I started playing piano when I was 6 years old. I taught my first student when I was 14 years old -- a little girl who I taught all through elementary, middle, and high school, and with whom I still keep in touch to this day! From 14 to 34, I taught private lessons to nearly 150 different students. I also created and directed an a cappella singing group for middle school girls and worked as music director for a summer theatrical production. I have two years of university courses in music theory, voice, piano, conducting, and arranging. I took a hiatus from music teaching in early 2018 and am looking to share the love of music with students again!

I provide theory and music lessons to students ranging from true beginners to early-advanced performers. My approach to teaching is malleable to each family's goals, but as a default, I use a more classical approach that emphasizes theory and technique from the earliest age (e.g., note reading, fingering exercises, scales/keys, chord construction/progressions, and arpeggios are important skills that build towards a true understanding of music).
My primary goal is for students to learn to LOVE MUSIC. I will introduce classical compositions but gladly incorporate different music (movie themes, pop songs, etc.) based on students' interests. I assign work that prioritizes note reading, but I adapt to students who show strong interest in learning by ear. If my students are interested in composing, I create composition assignments to nurture that interest & teach music theory.
I am most well-versed in Alfred Basic piano series for beginners to late-intermediate students, primarily utilizing their Lessons/Recital/Theory books. I've taught from a variety of method books/publishers, however, and will gladly use any series a student already has/wants. I supplement all method books with a myriad of additional pieces to stimulate musical exposure and creativity. For music theory students, I assign several core worksheets on a weekly basis to supplement one or two primary theory books.
I ask my students to practice throughout the week via one of two methods: Assignment-based (typically for younger OR theory-based students, completing a weekly assignment created by me, 5x/week) or Time-based (usually for older students, practicing in minutes equal to 3x their age, 5 days/week).
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Megan was my piano teacher for 10 years as I grew from complete beginner to advanced player. I came to know her not just as my teacher but as a mentor and friend. She is truly an amazing person who takes the time to connect with her students and listen to their needs. For the past decade I have seen her continue to grow and excel in the fields of neuroscience and statistics. She is very intelligent and a natural teacher who I would highly recommend.
