About Derek
I moved out to California from the Midwest to get my PhD in Physics at UC Irvine. I enjoy cycling and good food :). I teach physics lectures at local colleges like Chapman University, Santiago Canyon College, and Concordia University. I hope we can meet!
My teaching style is always interactive, never passive, and students are engaged and active from the beginning to the end and thinking through everything in the lesson. I've had former students go on to UCLA, Berkley, Princeton, Purdue, UCI, Penn State, and more!

My approach to teaching and tutoring is entirely unique. I aim to achieve deep and long lasting understandings in my students by emphasizing the fundamental concepts in each example instead of just having students mindlessly plug things into formulas, as is all too often common in math and physics teachers. My favorite moments of teaching are when students have that "OH!" lightbulb moment and for me ideally every lesson should have such a moment!

Derek was an incredible help to my son in calculus. He was extremely flexible with scheduling, which made a huge difference for us, and he really took the time to break down formulas in a way that finally clicked.
