About Kristin

Mentorship lies at the heart of my tutoring philosophy. My students are apprentices in the craft of writing and analyzing literature, and it is my job to guide them on their journey. Through years of study and practice, I have built up an arsenal of information and it is my job to translate information into something the students can understand and learn from. Understanding where my students are at when they come to me is central to this idea because then I am able to tailor my responses to their work to address their strengths and weaknesses. I want my students to grow and build on their previous knowledge of writing and literature and challenge them to stretch their imaginations with every piece they read and write.
There is a strong nurturing component that goes hand-in-hand with my mentoring style. Everyone is able to learn the craft of writing if they are given the right tools. I care about my students and want them to thrive. Sometimes it’s the little victories that matter most. Students need to be graded fairly and have grades lowered when appropriate, but it is also important to encourage and support valid attempts. Finding positive things to say about a piece of writing, even if the letter grade is low, is important. It keeps students from becoming discouraged. I am not here to break my students down, but to build them up. A paper with a D grade may still have something in it, even one small nugget of potential, that can be nurtured and brought to life with the proper guidance.
