About James
I’m James, an engineer with a PhD in robotics and a passion for teaching.
I studied Mechatronics Engineering at QUT, graduating with First Class Honors, a GPA of 7.0 and the University Medal. I then completed a PhD in robotics and computer vision.
I taught at QUT from 2011 to 2022, working my way up from lab demonstrator and tutor to lecturer and unit coordinator. Throughout that time I consistently received positive feedback on my teaching from both students and peers. In 2020 I was made a Fellow of Advance HE, which recognizes teaching practice in higher education.
I’ve also spent several years as a robotics engineer in industry, most recently leading a software team building autonomous inspection robots. Today I’m developing my own business in wearable technology.
I enjoy helping students get past the point where they’re stuck, and I know how stressful first-year engineering can be. I’m patient, organized and reliable. I’ll always turn up prepared to help you make real progress.

My lessons are practical and built around your course. We work from your own material: lecture notes, tutorial problems, past exams and assignments. That way, every session is focused on what you’re actually being assessed on.
A typical lesson starts by working out where you’re stuck. We then go through the concept, work through examples together, and finish with you solving problems while I guide you. For programming subjects, we can write and debug code live in Python or C/C++. Where it helps, I show how the theory is used in real engineering, which makes it easier to understand and remember.
Lessons are usually 1 hour. Longer sessions of 1.5–2 hours are available for exam preparation or assignment work. I also offer assignment reviews with written feedback, and small group sessions for students in the same course.
I taught at QUT for over 10 years as a tutor, lecturer and unit coordinator. I have a PhD in robotics, have worked as a robotics engineer in industry, and am currently developing my own business within the realm of wearable technology.
My lessons are for:
1. University students in first-year engineering, particularly robotics, programming and engineering maths
2. High school students in robotics, engineering, technology, maths and physics
Lessons are online, or in person depending on location. A free 30-minute intro session is available to discuss what you need.
