About Estelle
Working as a researcher for the NSPCC I peer-reviewed ethics proposals for MSc students who aimed to work with children. I also have extensive postgraduate experience in developing social science research projects and ethical proposals through my MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice and my current PhD degree in Geography. I have worked on projects that involve partnering with third sector organisations and also with vulnerable people and I understand the complexities inherent in social science research.

I help students in the social sciences to understand ethical procedures required for their projects and to develop their own ethics proposals for committee approval. A failed ethics proposal can be a barrier to conducting your research, and bad ethics leads to bad research. I work with you on your own social science project to develop your ethical understanding and tailor your ethics proposal specifically to your project and your needs so that you can go forward and conduct ethical and excellent research.
I am a PhD student in Human Geography researching policing in Scotland. I have an MA (Hons) in Philosophy from the University of St Andrews, an MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Edinburgh, and extensive research experience acquired through working as a researcher at the University of Edinburgh/NSPCC Child Protection Research Centre. I have significant experience in developing complex ethics proposals for social science research projects and I have also peer-reviewed ethics proposals for MSc students.
My lessons are structured around building up the theory behind ethical research and then applying these methods to develop your bespoke ethics proposal with the aim of helping you to gain a solid foundation in ethical methods and to create an ethics proposal that will gain committee approval.
Ethics proposals often require a tight-turnaround and so I work with you as you need me. My preferred method is to meet with you in the first instance to discuss your project and your needs. I will then tutor you in the ethical procedures specific to your project and support your proposal development through reviewing and further consultation.
I will tutor you to provide a solid understanding of informed consent, withdrawal procedures, participant information sheets, vicarious trauma, researcher integrity, anonymity and confidentiality, and conflicts of interest. An understanding of these are essential to the development of a strong ethics proposal. In addition, ethics committees are requiring students to develop a comprehensive digital data management plan for the safeguarding of stored data, and I therefore also provide guidance in creating a data management plan to protect your data as part of this package.
