I am a zoologist with a PhD in reproductive sciences and molecular biology. I have more than 13 years experience working in conservation organisations. I have mentored undergraduate and post graduate students most of which have gone onto further studies.

My personal beliefs surrounding education are influenced by a parent and peers that have, collectively, decades of teaching experience. My teaching approach is based on the appreciation of people’s diversity and the need to create comfortable and safe environments in which to learn and express ourselves enjoyably. Teaching should recognize the individual’s cognitive, physical, linguistic and social characteristics and design appropriate and challenging learning experiences accordingly. Learning should include a transfer of knowledge from the teacher to the student but also promote a student’s self-motivation and discipline. Encouraging students to learn and acquire knowledge independently through active engagement and positive social interaction resulting in an experience that stimulates them to want to continue learning throughout their lives. The teacher’s role is to understand the central concept, tools of inquiry and the structure of the disciplines, so that she/he can act as a guide and central point of reference for the student. As teacher’s we present and disseminate knowledge by understanding the different perspectives that engage the critical and creative thinking of students which are then assessed using multiple tools to document the progress of each student and guide our ever-evolving planning and instruction. Finally, teaching should involve adaptability and constant self-reflection, using documented evidence to evaluate her/his own practice, choices and actions. Self-reflection and awareness are integral to understanding our own place in the environment.
