About Jon
I am a PhD-qualified tutor with a strong academic background in Politics, International Relations, History and strategic studies. I hold a PhD in Politics and International Relations from the University of Sheffield, an MSc in Strategic Studies and an MA in International Relations and East Asia.
My research has focused on China's rise as a naval power, bringing together questions of military strategy, international order, political decision-making and the changing distribution of global power. My wider academic interests include geopolitics, foreign policy, political systems, international security and the historical development of the modern international order.
I enjoy helping students make sense of complicated subjects and understand how political, historical and strategic developments connect. Rather than simply learning facts, dates or theories, students should develop the ability to explain why events happened, compare different interpretations and construct arguments supported by evidence.
My experience also extends beyond academia. I have worked in international business development and taught language learners, experiences that have strengthened my ability to explain challenging ideas clearly and adapt my approach to different students.
Whether you are studying for school examinations, preparing for university assessments or pursuing a personal interest in politics and history, I offer structured, engaging lessons tailored to your level and objectives.

Every lesson is adapted to your current knowledge, learning objectives and the subjects you find most challenging. I aim to make complex material accessible while encouraging you to think independently and develop your own interpretations.
Depending on your interests and level of study, we can cover:
Politics and political systems: Political ideologies, institutions, elections, governments and the relationship between states and societies.
International Relations: Great-power competition, foreign policy, diplomacy, international organisations and the changing international order.
History: Understanding historical events in context, comparing interpretations and exploring the political, economic and strategic forces that shape historical change.
Geopolitics and strategic studies: Military power, maritime strategy, defence policy, China's rise and contemporary security challenges.
Essay writing and argumentation: Develop a clear thesis, structure your argument, use evidence effectively and address alternative explanations.
Examination preparation: Review key concepts, practise answering questions and develop a systematic approach to timed essays and assessments.
Critical thinking: Evaluate sources, distinguish evidence from opinion, compare competing arguments and identify the assumptions behind different interpretations.
University-level study: Engage with academic literature, understand theoretical debates and develop more sophisticated analytical approaches.
My approach combines clear explanations, guided discussion, structured exercises and feedback. I encourage students to ask questions and challenge assumptions, while ensuring that they develop a firm grasp of the relevant material.
For school students, lessons can reinforce classroom learning and develop the knowledge and analytical skills needed for examinations. For university students, we can explore theoretical debates, scholarly interpretations and more advanced approaches to research and argumentation. For independent learners, lessons can follow particular interests, historical periods or contemporary international developments.
My aim is to help you understand your subject in depth, communicate your ideas clearly and approach unfamiliar questions with confidence.
Get in touch to tell me what you are studying, which topics interest you and what you would like to achieve. I would be happy to discuss a suitable programme of lessons.
